Holidays Around the District

December 18, 2023

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and the holiday spirit has certainly been embraced throughout the District over the past few weeks.

From decorating classrooms and hallways, to festive art projects, gingerbread house competitions and more, students and staff have been busy in the days leading up to winter break.

At a handful of District secondary schools, including Brookswood Secondary (see video below), the Langley RCMP held a Cram The Cruiser fundraiser, in which students, staff, families and other members of the community were encouraged to bring food donations – or cash – to donate to the local food bank.

At the School Board Office, the lobby’s display case featured bright and festive trees created by a Kindergarten class at Glenwood Elementary, while many schools across the district also decked the halls with all manner of holiday décor.

The holiday festivities were not just confined to District schools, either, as earlier this week the Langley Fundamental 8-12 Concert Choir performed a free concert of holiday favourites for the public in Langley’s Douglas Park. Later the same day, the choir also stopped by the Langley School Board office to perform a few songs for staff and visitors.

School Board staff were treated to a performance by a second choir, the Langley Fine Arts Chamber Choir, during a holiday lunch earlier this month, too.

Many schools have their own traditions – one of them involving pancakes. Shortreed Community Elementary is one of many schools that hosted its Santa Breakfast, which once again saw a great turnout, with students, families and other members of the community gathering to enjoy pancakes and sausages prepared by school staff and other volunteers. There was even an appearance by the Jolly Old Elf himself!

Happy Holidays!
