About Athletics at DWP
Welcome to the homepage for Redhawks Athletics. At Poppy, our athletic program is considered an extension of the learning that occurs in classrooms and is grounded in the values of community, integrity, courage, and excellence. Our emphasis is on providing our student-athletes with a comprehensive athletic program that offers multiple opportunities to engage in individual and team sports. We believe that athletic competition is a powerful opportunity for student-athletes to learn and grow as physical and mental challenges in a team context offer athletes the opportunity to develop leadership skills, self–confidence and a commitment to others that will inspire them to lead productive and active lives.

Athletic Fees:
Participation on any team is subject to an Athletic Fee and a Uniform Fee. The Athletic Fee covers costs related to registration, tournament entry fees, transportation, equipment, officiating, bus maintenance, and significant upkeep of athletic infrastructure. All fees must be paid online through Student Cash. The non-refundable uniform fee ($10) goes towards replacement of uniforms as needed.
Eligibility:
British Columbia School Sports (BCSS) governs high school athletics across the province. They make all decisions regarding athlete eligibility. When a student enters Grade 8 at Poppy and is registered with BCSS, the school they are registered with becomes their “Home School”. Any movement to another school after this will require approval from BCSS. Depending on the circumstances of the move this process may be as simple as submitting a simple form or it may require a more rigorous application/appeal process.

The Mission, Vision, and Values of DW Poppy Redhawks Athletics are based on the Purpose, Vision, and Values created by the athletics working group of the Langley School District.
Vision Statement: To inspire all athletes to reach their full potential and to create a lasting legacy for the future.
Mission: DW Poppy Secondary Redhawks Athletics strives to be an inclusive, passionate, and inspiring community of athletic excellence. We believe that the opportunity for participation in a wide variety of student-selected activities is a vital part of a student’s educational experiences. Such participation is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the school, the activity, fellow students, the community and to the athletes themselves. We also believe that lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, competition and how to win and lose gracefully are integral parts of our athletic program.

PARENT AND SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT
DW Poppy strives to encourage good sportsmanship throughout our athletic program, and this includes good spectator behaviour. We expect all spectators at our contests to be respectful of players, coaches, officials, and other spectators. Spectators are encouraged to applaud the efforts of their team and should not engage in any behaviour that is critical, distracting, or derogatory toward opponents or officials. We believe it is imperative to let the players, coaches, and officials play the game. Parents and spectators are encouraged to model positive sportsmanship for all athletes and to support our student-athletes in a way that emphasizes personal improvement and growth over scoreboard outcomes. Spectators should be the “extra person” for their squad, supporting and cheering on their side, and our school will not permit any behaviour that detracts from the proper conduct of the game or disadvantages a player or team.
