November 2026 Newsletter

Message from Administration

October was a busy and rewarding month at Langley Fundamental Elementary. Students and staff engaged in meaningful learning experiences, celebrated World Teachers' Day, participated in a variety of fun events like Halloween, continued our literacy and numeracy learning initiatives, and took part in a variety of school activities that strengthen our sense of community. Our staff also spent significant time collaborating around our Action Plan for Learning, literacy screening, inclusion, and student success goals as we continue working together to support every learner.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our students, staff, families, PAC, volunteers, and community partners. Whether you were supporting learning at home, volunteering your time, attending school events, fundraising, or contributing behind the scenes, your efforts help make LFES the special place it is. We are fortunate to be part of such a caring and engaged school community.

As we move into November, I also want to remind everyone to take extra care during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. With fewer daylight hours and the recent time zone changes, many students will be travelling to school in darker conditions. Drivers are asked to slow down, stay alert, watch carefully for students and families crossing roads and moving through parking lots, and follow all traffic and parking procedures. A few extra moments of patience and attention can make a tremendous difference in keeping everyone safe. This reminder aligns with recent district and ICBC safety messaging shared with schools this fall.

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, welcoming, and connected school community. We look forward to another great month of learning together at LFES.

MyEdBC Parent Consent Forms

sd35-myedbc-online-permission-forms-2026_page_2.19533129346.jpg

Each year, Langley Schools asks families to complete a set of parent consent forms for their child. These consent forms are required by our schools to ensure the health, safety, and security of all students.

Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, Langley Schools will be using the MyEdBC parent portal to collect this information. In mid-September, parents/guardians will receive an email from the MyEdBC system notifying families to log in to the MyEdBC parent portal to complete the online consent forms.

A set of consent forms will need to be completed for each child attending a Langley school. It is advised to access MyEdBC and complete the parent consent forms using a desktop or laptop as the process requires the full site version (which is not mobile-friendly).

For step-by-step instructions, please read the MyEdBC Online Forms instructions for parents/guardians below:

SD35 MYEDBC Online Forms (Family Portal) 2026.pdf

If your email address or contact information has changed, please call your school to correct it in their files. If you have not received an email regarding consent forms by the end of September or have any questions/concerns, please contact your school administrator.

If you need help accessing the MyEdBC parent portal, see our MyEdBC Help webpage here or Request for Assistance webpage here.

Lost & Found Reminder

1791922964451.68c75c27846.pngOur Lost & Found is overflowing with jackets, sweaters, water bottles, lunch containers, and other items. We encourage all families to remind their children to check the Lost & Found for any missing belongings.

To help reunite items with their owners, please ensure your child’s clothing and personal items are clearly labeled with their name. Any unclaimed items will be donated on November 6th.

Thank you for helping keep our Lost & Found manageable and for checking to see if any treasures belong back at home!

Annual Christmas Concert - December 9

We are excited to invite families to our annual Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 9th! Students will be working hard and will look forward to sharing their talents with our school community.

To help accommodate families, we will be offering three performance times:

  • 9:00 a.m.
  • 1:00 p.m.
  • 6:00 p.m.

We would love for every student to have a family member in attendance to support them. However, due to gym capacity and fire safety regulations, we are only able to offer a limited number of tickets per family.

Information about ticket requests and distribution will be shared sometime in November. Please keep an eye on your email, as the ticket request link will be sent electronically.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. We look forward to celebrating the season together!

From the District

Poppies for Remembrance Day

It is a long-standing tradition for schools to support our veterans and the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion. Once again this year, our school will be receiving a poppy for every student and distributing them to classes. We will continue to collect funds this year in support of the Legion’s Poppy Campaign but kindly ask students and their families to donate online via School Cash Online:

 https://sd35.schoolcashonline.com/

Please do not send cash or cheques with your child to school. If you need assistance accessing School Cash Online, please contact the school office.

We appreciate your generosity. As always, our school is committed to educating our community about the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day.

Parent Consent Forms on MyEDBC Ready for Families

Parent consent forms can now be received on MyEDBC. Families are asked to please log in to the MyEDBC parent portal and complete the process. A set of consent forms will need to be completed for each child attending a Langley school. It is advised to access MyEDBC and complete the parent consent forms using a desktop or laptop as the process requires the full site version (which is not mobile-friendly). For step-by-step instructions, please read here. More information can be found on the District website here.

Reading Link Challenge
This reading competition is for grade 4/5 students who are interested in competing on a team. The six books will be announced on November 1st. Students will meet every Friday from 11:25 - 11:55 to prepare for the school competition (March or April). The winning team will then compete in the Langley School District challenge. See the Fraser Valley Regional Libraries website for more information on the challenge. Since this is an extra-curricular reading program students will have to make up any work that they miss when they are away from the classroom for 30 minutes each Friday.

Soraapp.com
Our grade 4/5 students have had the opportunity to learn about this app during library classes. Students can read both eBooks and audiobooks using technology. Students use their Microsoft username and password to sign in to the app; this information is on a label in student agendas. All Langley School District students have access to the app with their username and password. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like this information and your child is not in grade 4/5. The Langley Book of the Year books are also available on this app.

Community Values Books

Our Community Values Coupon Book fundraiser has officially wrapped up! We were able to raise an amazing $15,199.60! Thank you to all the families who sold and/or purchased a book. These funds will go a long way in supporting our school in areas like books, sports equipment, field trips, STEM kits, and more! Big thank you to Luci-Anne for running this fundraiser and pushing it to success!

Parent Contribution Letters

Parent Contribution letters went home last week! Based on parent feedback in years past, we are asking for a direct contribution in lieu of intense fundraising (with the exception of grade 5 fundraising). This allows us to still provide our school with funds needed to make our school year and student experience amazing! Our goal is to raise $8000 through direct contribution. If we don't make our goal, we will need to reevaluate our options and consider adding more fundraisers. Donations can be made via cash, cheque, etransfer, or School Cash Online. Please see the contribution letter for more details!

Christmas Hamper Donations

Our PAC is once again organizing Christmas Hampers for families in need this holiday season, and we would love your support!

This year, we’re trying something new! Instead of collecting individual gifts for each person, we’ll be creating one gift basket per family. This means there will be just one sign-up sheet per class to cover both gift basket items and food donations.

Please keep an eye out for the sign-up link, which will be emailed to each classroom by the class moms on November 23rd.

We will begin collecting donations on December 7th, with all items due by December 10th. Donations can be dropped off in your child’s classroom. If you are donating gift cards, please send them to Mrs. Moores in the office.

Please ensure all donations are in the classroom by the morning of December 11th. Our Grade 5 students will be assembling the hampers after recess, and our wonderful parent volunteer drivers will deliver them to the families that same day after school.

Thank you so much for your generosity and support! Your contributions help make the holiday season brighter for families in our community. ❤️

The holiday season is almost here! Join us for two festive events filled with holiday cheer and opportunities to connect with our school community.

Community Information

November Health Messaging – Fraser Health

Healthy Screen Use

Health, safety, and wellness continue to be a priority in our schools. To help support our students and families, we are sharing important information from our community partner Fraser Health about Healthy Screen Use. Please see below for helpful reminders to support your child.

Why Does Screen Time Matter?

Children and families are increasingly spending time on screens such as TVs, computers, tablets, smartphones and gaming devices. Too much screen time can take away from activities that are essential for healthy development, like spending time with family and friends, playing outdoors and getting a good night’s sleep.

Choosing Quality Screen Time at Home

Not all screen time is the same. Educational screen time, such as homework, online classes or video calls with family, can be beneficial and support learning and connection. Recreational screen time includes activities like watching videos, gaming or scrolling on devices for entertainment. Too much recreational screen use can have negative impacts on childhood growth and development, such as:

Less time for social interaction and family connection.

Less physical activity and outdoor play.

Less opportunity for creativity, reading and other offline interests.

Negative impacts on mental well-being and behaviour.

How Much Screen Time is Recommended?

According to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines:

·        Under 2 years: Screen time is not recommended.

·        Ages 2–5: Limit to less than one hour per day.

·        Ages 5 and older: Limit to less than two hours per day.

Simple ways to encourage healthy screen habits

The Canadian Paediatric Society highlights the “four M’s” to help families build healthy routines:

·        Manage: Set clear rules and limits, such as creating a family media plan.

·        Meaningful use: Encourage content that supports learning and active engagement.

·        Model: Show healthy screen habits in your own daily routines.

·        Monitor: Watch for signs that screen use is replacing important offline activities.

Road, Pedestrian, and School Bus Safety - ICBC

With fewer daylight hours and as we enter the season of wind, rain, and ice, we are sharing an important reminder from our community partner ICBC to students, staff, and families to help keep our community safe. Drivers should be alert, focus on the road, watch for pedestrians, especially at intersections and transit stops, and always be ready to stop. Pedestrians and travelers on bikes or scooters should be careful at intersections, always use designated crosswalks, remove headphones and devices, and be aware of your surroundings.

An important note for drivers, when a school bus has its red lights flashing, drivers travelling in either direction must stop. Students may be crossing the road to get to or from the bus. Please stop, stay alert, and do not proceed until it is safe.

For more tips read this resource Kids Pedestrian Safety or visit ICBC’s webpage here.

Odds and Ends

Student Absences

  1. Be sure to let the office know when your child will be absent from school.
  2. Call the office at 604-530-9973 and leave a message or send an email to LFEAttendance@sd35.bc.ca

Dress for the Weather

Students should come prepared for cool and wet weather with:

  • waterproof jacket or raincoat with a hood
  • warm, layered clothing
  • waterproof footwear to wear outside and a separate set of shoes to wear indoors
  • an extra pair of socks, especially on rainy days

Other Considerations

  • please label jackets, boots, and other rain gear with your child's name
  • consider sending a change of clothes for younger students or on particularly wet days
  • recess, lunch, and KM club continue outdoors in most weather conditions (unless it's unsafe)
  • an umbrella is optional, but rain jackets with hoods are often easier for students during active play

Thank you for helping students stay warm, dry, and ready to learn and play outdoors!

Hockey at Recess/Lunch Play Periods

In the past, students have used the school’s floor hockey equipment to play outside during recess and lunch. Unfortunately, this equipment is not designed for outdoor use, and we have been replacing broken sticks far too often. The ongoing cost has become unsustainable, so the school will no longer be able to replace damaged floor hockey sticks.

Moving forward, students who wish to play hockey on their assigned day are welcome to bring their own hockey stick from home. Students will need to work with their classroom teacher to determine an appropriate place to store personal sticks when they are not in use. Please note that the school cannot take responsibility for lost or broken personal hockey sticks.

Grade-level hockey days are as follows:

  • Mondays - Grade 5
  • Tuesdays - Grade 4
  • Wednesdays - Grade 3
  • Thursdays - Grade 5
  • Fridays - Grade 4

Safety on School Grounds – Watch Where You’re Running!

As a school community, we want to ensure that all students feel safe and cared for before, during, and after school. Throughout the day, we are encouraging students to be mindful of one another by walking in the hallways, moving safely around the school grounds, and taking a moment to look around before heading off to where they’re going. Recently, we’ve had a few collisions when students were moving too quickly, and we want to prevent any further injuries.

We kindly ask families to remind their children to move carefully on school property, especially during busy drop‑off and pick‑up times, and to watch out for younger and smaller peers. Your support helps keep our school a safe place for everyone.

Reminder: Toys and Valuables at School

We kindly ask families to ensure that students do not bring toys or valuable personal items to school. These items often lead to conflict between students, feelings of jealousy, and unnecessary distractions during learning time.

Additionally, the school cannot take responsibility for any personal belongings that are brought from home and become lost, damaged, or misplaced. To help keep our school environment positive, focused, and safe for all learners, we strongly recommend that these items remain at home.

Thank you for your support in helping all students have a great day at school!

Dogs on School Grounds

We enjoy seeing families out with their pets, but we want to remind everyone that not all members of our school community feel comfortable around dogs. To help ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and families, please keep the following in mind:

  • If you choose to bring your dog during drop-off or pick-up, you are responsible for your dog’s behaviour at all times.
  • Dogs must be leashed at all times while on school property.
  • Any dog that has shown physical aggression is not permitted on school grounds and should be left at home.

Our priority is that every student and community member feels safe and at ease. Thank you for your cooperation and consideration.

Nut Aware

We have quite a few students at Langley Fundamental Elementary who are allergic to peanuts or tree nuts. We are working to become a Nut Aware school in order to keep students safe.  Your child’s classroom teacher will let you know if it’s inadvisable to send nuts of any type (in
