Introducing Our New House Teams

Next school year, LFES will be launching refreshed house teams designed to build school spirit, student connection, and a sense of shared identity. Our new teams: Sockeyes, Wolves, Bears, and Eagles, were thoughtfully selected by a staff committee and will be represented by banners displayed in the gym. For the remainder of this school year, we will continue to use our current team names: Whitecaps, Canucks, Canadians, and Lions.

This spring, we’re inviting students from Grades 6–11 at LFMSS to take part in a logo design contest for each new house team. In September, our elementary students will vote on the designs, giving them a voice in shaping this part of our school culture. The winning designs will be featured on our house banners alongside the English team name and a translated local Indigenous name, used with permission.  Contest details will be shared with LFMSS soon so that we can begin collecting submissions.

Our house teams are intended to add fun, friendly competition to events like Sports Day while strengthening student ownership and belonging, much like our existing school identity as the Titans. We’re looking forward to sharing more details as the work continues and to celebrating student creativity and teamwork along the way.

Grade 4/5 Track and Field

I just wanted to send a quick note to inform you that our Track Meet will be on Thursday June 11th at McLeod Athletic Park this year. This is a competitive event where our school competes against several other local schools in the following Track Events: Long Jump, Ball Throw, 50M, 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 4x100M and a Shuttle Relay.  All grade 4 and 5 students will be learning and practicing the Track events in PE as well as with their classroom teachers.  This will be part of their PE mark as well as an opportunity to make the Track team.  However, not every child will make it to the Track Meet as we do run qualifying rounds for all the events.

Learning and training for Track and Field begins shortly after returning from Spring Break.  It is important that students who want to try and make the Track team are committed to regular attendance and coming with running shoes and comfortable clothing during this season.

Due to the number of students, events and limited time in the schedule, we are unable to make exceptions for children who are away or aren’t prepared.  We do our best to be fair and take as many students as are allowed by the Track committee.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.

I look forward to working with your children and being part of another great Track Meet!

Thank you,

Tracey Vyse

Student Reunification Drill - Recap

Division 18 (Grade 1) recently participated in a reunification drill to help students, parents and staff practice procedures that would be used to safely reunite students with caregivers in the event of an emergency. These drills are an important part of our school safety planning, as they help everyone understand routines, remain calm, and know what to expect should a real situation ever occur.

We’re happy to share that the drill went very well. Students followed directions calmly, and staff worked together to ensure the process was smooth and supportive for everyone involved. We were also grateful for the sunny weather, which made the experience more comfortable and positive for our students.

Thank you to our Division 18 students, caregivers and staff for their cooperation and positive attitudes during this important practice.

Class Placement Requests

As we approach the end of the school year and begin preparations for September, we know many families are thinking ahead about class placements for the coming year.

We deeply value the trust and involvement of our LFES families, and we recognize that parents know their children best. At the same time, creating class groupings is a thoughtful and complex process that takes many factors into account, including learning needs, social dynamics, instructional balance, and overall class composition. For this reason, we are not able to accommodate specific teacher requests.

Similarly, while we understand the importance of friendships and connections, we are also unable to guarantee placement requests for specific friends. This is not a reflection of a lack of care for student relationships; rather, it allows us to create balanced classrooms and to support students in developing resilience, flexibility, and new social connections. Our experience tells us that students often grow in wonderful ways when they have opportunities to build new friendships while still maintaining existing ones throughout the school community.

Our staff works collaboratively and with great care to ensure that every student is placed in an environment where they can thrive. We have tremendous confidence in our entire teaching team and are proud of the professionalism, dedication, and care they bring to their classrooms each day. We are confident that all students will be well supported, regardless of their class placement.

We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we make these decisions with the well‑being of all students in mind. Our shared goal is to provide the best possible learning experience for every child at LFES.

Thank you for your continued support and trust.

Dress for the Weather

  1. Students should come prepared for outdoor activities with waterproof jackets, long pants and boots
  2. Indoor shoes are recommended for comfort inside
  3. Recess, lunch, and KM Club continue outdoors in most weather conditions
  4. Indoor options are reserved for extreme weather
  5. Thank you for helping ensure students stay warm, dry, and ready to learn

Hockey at Recess/Lunch Play Periods

In the past, students have used the school’s floor hockey equipment to play outside during recess and lunch. Unfortunately, this equipment is not designed for outdoor use, and we have been replacing broken sticks far too often. The ongoing cost has become unsustainable, so the school will no longer be able to replace damaged floor hockey sticks.

Moving forward, students who wish to play hockey on their assigned day are welcome to bring their own hockey stick from home. Students will need to work with their classroom teacher to determine an appropriate place to store personal sticks when they are not in use. Please note that the school cannot take responsibility for lost or broken personal hockey sticks.

Grade-level hockey days are as follows:

  • Mondays - Grade 5
  • Tuesdays - Grade 4
  • Wednesdays - Grade 3
  • Thursdays - Grade 5
  • Fridays - Grade 4

Being Good Neighbours

As a member of our school community, we ask families to help us be respectful neighbours. Please remember to stay off neighbouring lawns, avoid parking on or blocking driveways, and drive slowly through the neighbourhood during drop-off and pick-up times. These small actions go a long way in maintaining positive relationships with our community and keeping everyone safe. Thank you for your cooperation and care.

Safety on School Grounds – Watch Where You’re Running!

As a school community, we want to ensure that all students feel safe and cared for before, during, and after school. Throughout the day, we are encouraging students to be mindful of one another by walking in the hallways, moving safely around the school grounds, and taking a moment to look around before heading off to where they’re going. Recently, we’ve had a few collisions when students were moving too quickly, and we want to prevent any further injuries.

We kindly ask families to remind their children to move carefully on school property, especially during busy drop‑off and pick‑up times, and to watch out for younger and smaller peers. Your support helps keep our school a safe place for everyone.

Reminder: Toys and Valuables at School

We kindly ask families to ensure that students do not bring toys or valuable personal items to school. These items often lead to conflict between students, feelings of jealousy, and unnecessary distractions during learning time.

Additionally, the school cannot take responsibility for any personal belongings that are brought from home and become lost, damaged, or misplaced. To help keep our school environment positive, focused, and safe for all learners, we strongly recommend that these items remain at home.

Thank you for your support in helping all students have a great day at school!

Grade 5 Camp Fundraising Information

Grade 5 Stillwood

As part of Langley Fundamental Elementary’s long‑standing traditions, our Grade 5 students are once again heading to Camp Stillwood on May 22. Through their hard work and fundraising efforts, students have proudly raised the funds needed to attend this special experience.

For many years, Camp Stillwood has been a meaningful milestone for our Grade 5 students—providing opportunities to build independence, strengthen friendships, and create lasting memories before moving on to middle school. This tradition reflects the values that have shaped our school community for decades: responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance.

We are proud of our Grade 5 students for their commitment and thank our families and staff for their continued support in keeping this cherished tradition alive.

Youth Vaping Information (from Fraser Health)

Health, safety, and wellness continue to be a priority in our schools. To help support our students and families, we are sharing important information from our community partner Fraser Health about youth vaping for school-aged children and youth. Please see below for helpful guidelines and resources to support your child.

Vaping is popular among youth. Daily or near-daily use can increase the risk of mental and physical health harm.

In 2023, 26 per cent of youth in grades seven through 12 in British Columbia reported having vaped. The most common age that B.C. youth first tried vaping was 13.

How to support youth to prevent, delay or reduce vaping

It is important to be supportive and recognize that setbacks may happen. You can help by being a positive role model and offering guidance in the following ways:

  • Have open conversations about vaping. Listen to your child’s beliefs and offer accurate information to help them understand the risks involved.
  • Practice refusal skills with your child by discussing ways they can say no to vaping, especially in situations that feel uncomfortable to them.
  • Be honest about your own use of tobacco, cannabis or vaping products. Share any health impacts or challenges you’ve experienced.
  • If you vape, avoid vaping around children to limit their exposure to second-hand vapour. Consider quitting or reducing vaping to improve your own health. For help, contact Quit Now, a provincially funded nicotine cessation program.
  • Store vapour products securely and out of reach of children and youth.
  • Tip sheet for parents: Talking with your teen about vaping

For more information about child and youth substance use, including services, programs and resources available for children and youth, visit Fraser Health's website.
