Odyssey 2026 Keynote: From Presence to Permanence: How to Assess Reconciliation in Schools with Dr. Niigaan Sinclair | On-Demand Learning Feature
The work of Truth and Reconciliation, and embedding Indigenous Education into our schools and classrooms has been ongoing for over a decade now. While this work has been both powerful and transformational, what is not yet clear is how to assess whether these programs, initiatives and commitments are having the impact that was intended through the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. In his powerful keynote address at Odyssey 2026, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, one of Canada's pre-eminent and leading Indigenous educators, provides an approach on how school districts can asses where they currently stand in this work. He outlines a process on how the real work for educators still lies ahead in moving this work along the continuum of presence, to practice, to pedagogy and eventually need to land in permanence.

In this NEW ONE-DAY WORKSHOP, TOM SCHIMMER and DANIELLE PALOPOSKI reframe the role of assessment in an AI-rich world by shifting the focus from task completion to the production of defensible evidence.

PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL READINGS

Helping Teens Understand Manipulative Online Marketing | Screenagers | Blog
In this article/blog, teen psychologist, Lisa Damour writes about the fact that many popular games and apps are designed to encourage kids to make purchases once they’re already hooked in, and how these moments can become important opportunities to teach our kids about manipulative marketing, digital spending, and becoming thoughtful consumers online. In her work, Lisa offers actual phrases to try when talking with teens. Conversation is psychology in action, and getting help with ways to create productive conversations, rather than tipping a teen into reactance, is incredibly valuable. You’ll see her do that throughout her writing.

TECH TIPS

Stop Motion Studio
Stop Motion Studio is an easy-to-use, student-friendly app that lets students create their own animated movies by taking a series of photos and playing them back to show movement. Its simple design makes it a great entry point for all ages, while still offering creative features like sound, titles, and effects for more polished projects.
Ways teachers can use Stop Motion Studio in their classrooms:
Support understanding of concepts: Have students create short animations to show learning—such as the water cycle, plant growth, or a historical event—helping them demonstrate their thinking in a visual, hands-on way.
Build storytelling and communication skills: Students can plan, script, and produce their own animated stories, reinforcing sequencing, creativity, and collaboration while integrating digital literacy skills.
