LEARNING RESOURCES

Electrical Safety Lessons & Contest | Power Smart for Schools | More info
This week is Electrical Safety Week, where Power Smart promotes electrical safety lessons around the province. These lessons are important to share with youth every year because electrical hazards often aren't obvious, but they can quickly become very dangerous. To support lesson planning, they have compiled a unit of 10 electrical safety activities ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 7 levels. Every activity includes a fun and memorable way to learn, review, and remember important electrical safety lessons.
They are also hosting a fun contest. One of our most important safety messages is to stay 10 metres away from a downed power line, which is compared to one school bus or four skipping ropes. Classes are invited to share their own creative way to visualize what 10 metres looks like, for a chance to win fun prizes.

Spring Learning Resources | Veterans Affairs Canada

  • New National Monument to Canada's Mission in Afghanistan | Grade 7-12 | More info | Video
Construction of the National Monument to Canada's Mission in Afghanistan officially began with a ground‑breaking ceremony in Ottawa on May 4, 2026. The monument will honour the more than 40,000 Canadians who served in Afghanistan, including 158 Canadian Armed Forces members who lost their lives. Students can explore the meaning behind this powerful new memorial through a short video featuring monument designer Adrian Stimson.
  •  Remembering Beaumont-Hamel | Grades 5-9 | More info
The 110th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel on July 1st offers a timely opportunity for students to learn about one of the most devastating days in Newfoundland and Labrador’s First World War history. You can help your class explore the events and significance of this action through the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel learning page, which provides accessible historical context and supports curriculum‑connected inquiry.
  • No. 2 Construction Battalion | All Ages
This summer marks the 110th anniversary of the creation of No. 2 Construction Battalion on July 5, 1916, which was the largest all-Black military unit in Canada's history.
  • Free Korean War Lesson Plans | All Ages | More info | Order USB Key
This spring marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong, one of Canada’s most important and fiercest engagements of the Korean War. We are also pleased to offer this useful resource on a unique (and free!) USB key.

  • Learning History in the Age of AI | Grades 6-12
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) offers new opportunities for student learning—but also raises important questions. We have two new lesson plans to help students build critical thinking, fact‑checking and ethical reasoning skills while studying Canadian military history:

    • Exploring generative artificial intelligence
Students use GenAI to summarize a historical sheet, then fact-check their creation and transform it into a new sketch note or infographic.

    • Artificial intelligence and remembrance
Students reflect on if and how GenAI should be used in military history and remembrance projects. They consider expectations about authorship and audience, and move toward developing guidelines on the ethical use of AI.

Coast Metro Numeracy Website - Updated with Practice Questions | Website Practice Questions
The Coast Metro Numeracy Website is a free resource available to all teachers K to 7.  The website provides a wealth and variety of rich math and numeracy lesson plans, units and other resources that classroom teachers can access to assist them with delivering a rich and varied numeracy program in their classroom.  The website can be accessed via the link above.
As well, based on feedback and input from teachers using this resource, the website has now been updated with a full Practice Question resource that is now complete.  The Practice Questions section of the website can be accessed via the link above.

Intermediate PHE Resources | Link
Using the link above, Intermediate teachers will find a rich array of evidence-based resources endorsed by Fraser Health and PHE Canada that can be used to assist with teaching a variety of subjects within the Intermediate PHE curriculum. These lessons are self-directed and include all aspects of the grade level curricula related to sexual health, puberty, and consent as well as drugs and vaping. Some teachers who are uncomfortable teaching this content/these skills may prefer this delivery method. Please note that while many of the resources are free to access, there are some like "Kids in the Know" which must be purchased by the school or teacher. Sexual Health Educators from SD23 created these “At Home Learning” resources and we have permission from them to share with teachers in Langley. You will also see that Langley does have hard copies of some these resources available through our District Learning Commons.

PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL READINGS

Documentaries - Sewatsiwin: They are Sacred and The Gift of Being Different
Below are the links to two excellent documentaries from Dr. Grant Bruno, Assistant Professor and Director of Indigenous Child Health, Department of Pediatrics, University of Alberta.  The documentaries focus on the gifts of neurodiverse students, especially students with autism, and help educators better understand the gifts that students with autism carry with them and how as educators, our job is to celebrate neurodiversity in students and figure out how to bring those gifts into our classrooms for all students.

TECH TIPS

Ways teachers can use Freeform with students:
  • Individual brainstorming — Students map ideas or plan projects on their own boards.
  • Digital notebooks — Learners collect images, sketches, and notes about a topic or unit in one visual space.
  • Multimedia Mind-mapping — Students can brainstorm for writing or creation
  • Multimedia project spaces — Learners can combine photos, videos, links, and drawings to build interactive timelines, reports, or presentations.
