PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL READINGS

Building Independence Through UDL with Katie Novak | Blog
In this last week's episode of the Education Table, Dr. Katie Novak dug into how paraeducators can use UDL to find the right balance between providing support and fostering independence. Through stories, examples, and actionable strategies, she shows how small shifts, like offering micro-choices, using intentional wait time, and prompting instead of fixing, can help students develop persistence and ownership of their learning. Whether you’re a paraeducator, teacher, or leader, this conversation is a powerful reminder that the goal isn’t just to help students complete a task: it’s to help them believe they can do it on their own. From Co-Teaching Chaos to Collaboration with Pam Tupy | Blog
When two educators share one classroom, it’s easy to slip into one teach/one support and miss the real power of partnership. In this blog post, Pam Tupy draws on 20 years of experience in teaching and coaching to show how co-teaching can move beyond parallel work into true collaboration. She outlines three key shifts: know and select the right co-teaching approach, clue students into how and why you’re teaching together, and honor the full collaborative cycle of planning, teaching, assessing and reflecting. With intentional design and shared ownership, the classroom transforms: two professionals, one mission, every learner included.  Click on the link above to reads the blog or listen to the podcast.

Assess That Podcast: Trust the Teacher: Why Percentages Fail and Professional Judgement Prevails | Podcast
In their most recent Assess that Podcast, Tom and Nat tackle one of education’s biggest myths: that percentages make grading fair and objective. They break down how percentage systems create the illusion of precision while concealing the true story of student learning. Through real numerical examples and insights from researchers, they reveal how averaging can distort growth, penalize early learning, and undermine teacher professionalism.

But this isn’t just a critique, it’s a call to action. Tom and Nat show why professional judgment is not a flaw in the system but its foundation, even within outcome-based frameworks. They share practical strategies for strengthening confidence in teacher judgment, communicating clearly with parents, and helping schools shift toward more authentic measures of learning. It’s an empowering conversation for any educator ready to move beyond numbers and trust the human side of assessment. You can access the full podcast via the link above.
