From Presence to Permanence: How to Assess Reconciliation in Schools with Dr. Niigaan James Sinclair | On-Demand Learning Feature
The work of Truth and Reconciliation, and embedding Indigenous Education into our schools and classrooms has been ongoing for over a decade now. While this work has been both powerful and transformational, what is not yet clear is how to assess whether these programs, initiatives and commitments are having the impact that was intended through the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. In his powerful keynote address at Odyssey 2026, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, one of Canada's pre-eminent and leading Indigenous educators, provides an approach on how school districts can asses where they currently stand in this work. He outlines a process on how the real work for educators still lies ahead in moving this work along the continuum of presence, to practice, to pedagogy and eventually need to land in permanence.

Assess That Podcast - "The Most Recent Evidence Isn't Always the Best Evidence" | Podcast
In their latest podcast, Tom and Natalie challenge the assumption that more recent automatically means more accurate. They explore why emphasizing recent evidence was an important shift away from traditional averaging, but also why turning that principle into a rigid grading rule can undermine the very accuracy we’re trying to achieve. Through practical classroom scenarios, Tom and Natalie unpack the relationship between recency, consistency, and quality of evidence, and what teachers should do when student performances contradict one another. They discuss the importance of professional judgment, the role of reassessment in resolving uncertainty, and why determining grades requires more than simply selecting the latest score. Ultimately, the conversation makes the case for a more thoughtful approach to grading: the goal isn’t to report what happened last, but to communicate the most defensible representation of what a student knows and can do now.

TECH TIPS

Generate Audio with Apple's Shortcuts
Need an Audio Version? You've Already Got the Tools.
Looking for a simple way to make learning content more accessible? It's easier than ever to convert written text into spoken audio using tools you may already have access to.
With Apple's Shortcuts app, you can type, paste, or import text and quickly generate an audio file that can be shared with students. This can be particularly helpful for supporting diverse learning needs, providing alternative ways to access content, or creating audio versions of directions, instructions, and reading materials.
Want to make the audio more engaging? Microsoft Copilot can help transform an existing article, handout, lesson, or learning resource into a conversational podcast-style script written for a single narrator. Once the script is generated, paste it into Apple's Shortcuts app or Microsoft Clipchamp's Text-to-Speech feature to create a professional-sounding audio resource in minutes.
Whether you're creating audio directions, supporting independent reading, reviewing key concepts, or providing multiple ways for students to access information, these tools make it quick and easy to create resources that support all learners.
