It was so great to see so many Shortreed families at our Back to School BBQ and Meet the Teacher evening on Thursday! Our amazing BBQ volunteers served up more than 300 hot dogs, and lots of smiles, to our families. A huge thank you to our PAC executive and all of the volunteers who helped make the evening such a success!

School Improvement Day This past Friday, our staff had the opportunity to gather, learn, and review the systems and programs we have in place at Shortreed. Teachers also had dedicated time to explore Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies. UDL recognizes that students learn in different ways and may need different pathways to be successful. Providing choice, flexibility, and multiple ways to access and demonstrate learning helps us meet students where they are while supporting their growth. Our goal is to continue creating classrooms where all students feel a sense of belonging, are supported in their learning, and have opportunities to experience success.

 Cross Country. Cross Country practices continue this week for our Grade 4/5 team members. Runners will meet with coaches on Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00 p.m. Please return permission forms to your child's teacher so students can be registered for the upcoming meets.

Elementary Soccer. Elementary soccer kicks off in October! Shortreed will play four games this season two home games and two away games. Games will take place on Tuesdays from 3:00–3:45 p.m. We are looking forward to cheering on our Eagles!

Accessible Merry-Go-Round. Students will be learning how to safely use our accessible merry-go-round. Our key expectations are:

• 5 students at a time
• Hold on while riding
• Wait for a full stop before getting on or off
• STOP means STOP

If you could review these expectations with your child, that would be very helpful. Most importantly, we want everyone to take turns, make space, and help make sure everyone can play! 💛

Breakfast Club Our Breakfast Club is up and running! If your child plans to attend, please take a moment to complete this form so we know how many students to expect and can plan for any food allergies or dietary needs.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation A reminder that there is no school on Wednesday, September 30, as we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On Tuesday, September 29, students and staff will participate in Orange Shirt Day as part of our ongoing learning and reflection.

Student Pick-Up at Lunch If you need to pick up your child for an appointment, please try to avoid doing so during lunch playtime. Between 12:00 and 12:35 p.m., all of our students are outside, making it more difficult to locate individual students. Thank you for helping us maintain safe and consistent supervision during this busy part of the day. If possible, please arrange appointments and pick-ups outside of this time.

Information & Reminders

 Community Volunteers in Emergencies Emergencies can happen unexpectedly due to weather events, such as earthquakes or flooding, or other unforeseen situations in our community. The health and safety of students, staff, and families is the District's priority. In an emergency, schools may rely on members of the community to assist with first aid, facilities and maintenance, safety and security, and general labour. Adults with specialized skills in areas such as health care, policing, and engineering would be especially valuable.

No action is needed from families at this time. This information is simply being shared so families are aware of how the District and schools may respond during an emergency.

Parent Consent Forms — MyEdBC Update The District has shared an update regarding the collection of online parent consent forms. The District recently discovered an issue with the provincial MyEdBC system and has worked with MyEdBC to resolve it. This has resulted in a delay in the launch and rollout of the parent consent forms. Some families may have already logged into the MyEdBC parent portal and completed their child's consent forms. If you have already completed them, you will unfortunately need to complete the process again when advised by the District.

If you have not yet completed the forms, you will still need to do so when the system is ready. The District is currently ensuring the system is ready to accept parent consent forms. Parents/guardians will receive an email when it is time to begin the process.

Transportation — My Ride K-12 App Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Langley School District Transportation Services will use the My Ride K-12 app and website to share up-to-date bus information with families and students.

The application allows parents/guardians and students to:

• View assigned bus stops and pick-up/drop-off times
• Receive notifications about bus delays
• Receive notifications about route changes

To access your child's bus information, sign up and log in to the My Ride K-12 app by following the instructions on the District's Bus Rider Information page.

Safer Schools Together — Parent Information Sessions Safer Schools Together is once again offering Family Information Sessions on a variety of topics. These sessions provide opportunities for parents and guardians to increase their knowledge about the evolving world of digital citizenship, social media, AI, and online safety. Sessions are recommended for families with children aged 10 and up.
