Newsletter #6 - November 21

Hello PEMS Families,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our PEMS families for your continued support through the months of November and December. Our students have been hard at work, and it’s exciting to see their growth both academically and personally.  We have many initiatives to support our community in the upcoming month.  Some initiatives to look forward to include; Giving Trees, Scholastic Book Fair, PAC Pancake Breakfast and the Winter Concert.

As always, we are grateful for your continued support and partnership in helping our students thrive.

The following are a few reminders of upcoming events and some new information since our last newsletter.

Winter Concert

Mr. Mills, Miss Joo and Ms. Williams have been busy preparing the band and choir students for our upcoming Winter concert.  The concert will take place in our gym on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd at 6:30.

Scholastic Book Fair

PEMS Scholastic Book Fair is COMING! December 1st- 5th, 8:30 - 3:00.  On December 3rd, the book fair will be open until 6:00. All purchases help our school earn new resources! Parents can drop by after school. Teacher are creating wish lists that will be posted on the Library Windows! The class that spends the most money earns a box of brand new books for their classroom, and the runner up wins $50 worth of books.

Giving Trees

We are embarking on our annual holiday fundraising initiative to help support families on the Willoughby Slope.

Our school undertakes this task through an initiative called “Giving Trees,” which allows our student population and community to purchase gift cards or give donations that are then curated into gift baskets to help support the vulnerable families in our community. We have recognized a significant increase in numbers of those in need over the last few years, and have committed to supporting 15 families this year. With this commitment comes the realization that we now need to reach out to our community for help.

Typically, during the school year, Peter Ewart Middle School offers family support in the form of breakfast and lunch programs, as well as participating in the district’s “Feeding Futures” program. We are also dedicated to helping make the holiday season a little easier by providing gift cards and winter clothing to our families who need it the most.

We have created an area for donations on School Cash Online. Those who would like to contribute but are not connected to Peter Ewart’s School Cash Online may donate via the Langley School District Foundation site. We will also be setting up “Giving Trees” around the school next week. The trees will contain gift tags indicating items that may be purchased and returned to the school for donation.

Thank you in advance for your support of our community. Your help is very appreciated!

Pancake Breakfast and Pajama Day

The PAC is hosting a pancake breakfast on December 11th for our students.  Students will come to the gym throughout the morning and early afternoon with their class to enjoy pancakes with friends.  For children with allergies, there will be some options. It is also Pajama Day!

Late Students

As a reminder, our bell for instruction rings at 8:25.  We ask that students arrive on campus before the 8:25 bell and be ready to learn.

Dress For The Weather

As a reminder, we are an outside school at recess and lunch time.  We encourage students to wear appropriate clothing for the upcoming winter season.

Information About School Status During Inclement Weather

Snow closures and power outages are an annual occurrence in the Langley School District. So, where do you go to get information about the status of schools during periods of inclement weather? If you are able to access the internet via computer or smartphone, current information about Langley schools can be accessed on all school websites or www.sd35.bc.ca. Updates are also posted to X (formerly Twitter) @LangleySchools and Facebook at www.facebook.com/langleyschooldistrict. If you don't have internet connectivity but your phone is working, call a relative or friend in an area that has not been affected by the storm and ask them to check the district website for you. Local radio stations are also informed of school status in Langley. Tune in to CKWX 1130AM, CKNW 980AM, Country Radio 107.1FM, Pulse 107.7 or CBC 690AM or 88.1FM for updates.

Please note that Langley District schools are all considered 'open' until a decision to close is required. Decisions on school closures are usually made by 6:30am. As always, it is a parent's decision whether to send their child to school based on safety and individual circumstances. If you feel it is unsafe for you or your child to travel to or attend an open school for any reason, please keep your child home and report an absence to the school.
