Re: Testing of Drinking Water in Schools
The Langley School District is responsible for testing drinking water in its district facilities, in particular, for the presence of lead. The District is compliant in its testing requirements and approved response plan with all governing bodies, including Fraser Health and the Ministry of Education. Under the testing plan, districts are required to test one-third of the schools considered at-risk (built pre-1990) every year.
In this round of required testing for 2024, the District has completed testing for the latest group of sites, including Alice Brown Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Uplands Elementary & Montessori, West Langley Elementary, Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary, Peterson Road Elementary, Wix-Brown Elementary, Nicomekl Elementary, Langley Fundamental Elementary, Douglas Park Community School, and Langley Meadows Community School.
Water samples were taken from each site. Results were found to be within acceptable limits except in three locations: a stagnant water sample from a drinking fountain in the west hallway at Alice Brown Elementary; a stagnant water sample in Room 16 at Glenwood Elementary, and a stagnant water sample in the gym kitchen sink at Uplands Elementary. As per the District’s response plan, the drinking fountain at Alice Brown was decommissioned, and lead-filter systems were installed in the sinks at both Glenwood and Uplands.
It is important to note, a few years ago all water fountains in classrooms were removed across the District and each school had a lead filtered water bottle filling station installed. For more information and a list of water testing results, please visit the District website page here. If you have any concerns or questions, please email feedback@sd35.bc.ca.
Sincerely,
Mal Gill
