FAQs

Our school office is always a hub of activity, and we are grateful for your patience and understanding as we work hard to support our students, staff, and families each day. To help us serve everyone efficiently, we kindly ask for your cooperation with the following:

Contact Information

Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to us. It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure the school has up-to-date contact information. If your phone numbers change, or if an emergency contact person is no longer available to pick up your child, you must advise the school.

Does your child know their name, address, and a phone number?

It is very important that kids learn this important safety information as early as possible. Here is a learn my phone number printable to help you!

  • Practice with toy phones.
  • Memorize the digits and have them call the number.
  • Use hands-on activities to help them remember the number.

Court Orders

In the interest of your child’s safety, please ensure that copies of recent court orders regarding your child(ren) are given to the school office for our records.

Our office is a very busy place: We ask that you limit messages that need to be relayed to your child through the office. For after school activities please write reminders in your child’s agenda, please do the same with medical appointments or other early dismissals.

Visitors: It is important that we are aware of who is visiting our building, please report to the main office when you enter the school. Our administrative team will always be available to help you and answer any questions you may have. Please do not go directly to classrooms without checking in at the office.

Supervision – Students should not be dropped off in the morning before 8:35am and should be picked up from school after the end of the school day, 2:35pm. The school provides for a fifteen-minute supervision period before the start and the end of the school day.

The school asks parents, guardians, and caregivers to be mindful of the extra burden placed on the office when students need to be supervised after supervision ends.

  • Important: If you know you cannot pick up your child on a daily basis, at the time of dismissal, please arrange for your child to go home with a friend or relative.

Please remember to call the school if your child is going to be late or away.

This helps us account for all students and ensures that everyone is safe. We encourage you to call the school before 8:00 am, 604-532-1444, to leave a message or email JDEAttendance@sd35.bc.ca We experience a higher volume of calls between 8:00 and 9:00 am.

Students arriving late at school, 8:55am or later, need to check in at the office and not go directly to class. Teachers may have already taken attendance, and we need to account for every student in the school.

When Children Are Sick

In fairness to all, please do not send your child to school if they are sick. We have neither the facilities nor the personnel to care for sick children. Students who are ill should receive proper medical attention and should not attend school until their health is reasonable.

Our policy is to send students who are sick home as soon as possible. Our practice is to call parents and ask that the student be picked up. For this reason, it is important that parents keep work and emergency phone numbers current.

If you need to pick up your students early,

Please communicate with your student’s teacher so that we can try to have them waiting in the office or called down from their class. This will help us out tremendously and will ensure your child is ready when you arrive to pick them up. parents must come to the office to check their child out. This is a way for us to track students who are no longer in the building, in the event of an emergency

  • We ask that parents/guardians please do not pick up students recess and lunch playtimes. When children are out on the fields and playgrounds it can be difficult to track them down and with using the PA it interrupts classes in session.

Dropping off items for Students

We do not encourage anything being dropped off unless absolutely imperative this is to avoid and limit classroom disruptions as well; the office is extremely busy.

  • Please make sure your students have everything they need for the day before they come to school. Lunch, water bottle, snacks, hats, boots, gloves, jacket, etc
  • Dress for the weather, make sure children are dressed for the weather and have all the clothing they need for the day.

If you must drop something off, please only drop off essential items for students (ie, eye glasses), call down times are just before recess10:20am and lunch11:55am.

If you are dropping off items for your student(s) the Drop off Table is just inside front entrance. Please label clearly items with your students’ First and Last Name and division.

Students at our school have a variety of food allergies and they are careful not to eat food that has not come from their home. Parents often want to bring treats for birthdays or other events. Please check with the teacher first so that if there are allergies, arrangements can be made for an alternate treat for that child.

Proof of Enrollment Requests

If parents need proof of enrollment (i.e., CRA, CIC, Citizenship, etc.) for their student(s). Copies of report cards are on the MyEd parent portal, families are asked to save report cards as they are only posted for a short period of time.

There is a cost of $20 and may take 3-5 days to be ready for pick up at the office. Please contact the office via email to request this.

School Lunches

No glass bottles or containers please to avoid accidental breakage. Please remember cutlery and a water bottle – A reminder to all families that if your child is eating food that requires cutlery, please send it in his/her lunch bag. We do not have a supply of plastic spoons or forks at the school.

Wet Coast Recess

An extra pair of socks, underwear and clothing for emergencies is necessary for all student’s grade K-5. These items should be stored in a clearly labeled zip-lock bag. We go outside for recess unless the conditions are truly awful. Like ‘puddles over your boots and rain bouncing off the sidewalk’. Please make sure your kids are dressed for the worst conditions in the forecast each day – warm coats, warm or waterproof boots (or both), toques, gloves.

Dogs on the School Property

If you walk your dog while bringing your children to and from school, the dog must be on a leash and in control please pick up after your dog too! If your dog tends to become aggressive around children or other dogs, please leave it at home. We don’t want dogs to become agitated and snapping or barking at children.

School Grounds

In order to provide a safe space for our children, we ask all visitors to come to the office when they are visiting the school.

Remember during school hours, the school grounds are for the use of the children in the building. Please do not bring younger siblings to play on the school grounds during school hours.

For safety reasons, we DO NOT encourage parents to stay on our playground during any of our recess times. All parents will be asked to either leave the playground area or visit the office by a staff member should they be spotted on our playground. The safety of our children is our primary focus and we know that our community joins us in this endeavour.

For this reason, we ask for the understanding and cooperation of the community while school is in session, those hours being defined as 8:46 a.m. to 2:35pm
