Bears' Beat - October 19, 2025

Information

I'm sensing a pattern here.

It was a 'pattern-y' sort of week with students in several classes. Making patterns, identifying the 'rule' that drives a pattern, and extending patterns are all skills we begin to teach in kindergarten, and that continue (particularly in math) all the way into high school. We had students in a couple of classes working on patterns last week.

Once students master repeating patterns, they start to increase the complexity of the elements, or work on increasing patterns (like add 1, then add 2, then add 3...).

Happy Diwali

Monday is the start of Diwali. This festival of light, observed by members of Hindu and Sikh faiths, "symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance" (source: Wikipedia). Observance might include the lighting of diyas, fireworks, and the decorating of floors with rangolis.

We wish all of our Bears who observe a happy Diwali!

Wet Coast Recess

Please remember that we observe the classic Wet Coast Recess. Even on rainy or cold or (rainy and cold )days, we will be playing outside. Please ensure your child is dressed for the conditions and has a change of clothes (in a marked ziploc) in the classroom. Even the older kids occasionally run afoul of a slippery spot and accidentally sit in a puddle.

Byelection Day (October 25) - Repeat

On Saturday, October 25th, many school gyms across the District will be used as Township of Langley Byelection polling stations from 8am – 8pm. As guided by Section 81 of the Election Act “accommodation in a school that is the property of a board of school trustees under the School Act must be made available by the board for use as a voting place.”

Please take note of extra pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area of these sites on this day. The District appreciates the support and cooperation from families and members of our community. The District is encouraging everyone who is eligible to do their civic duty and vote.  For a list of school sites being used, visit the District website here. Note: We are NOT a voting place for this one.

Here's a mesmerizing video of a rangoli being created. I'm a bit astonished that this one is described as 'simple.'
