Teeing Off For Student Success
A full slate of golfers – 36 teams, and nearly 150 golfers in total – dusted off their clubs and teed off at the Langley School District Foundation’s annual golf tournament, held Wednesday at Newlands Golf Course.
The event, now in its 19th year, has always been a popular one – selling out all available tee times is not unusual – but notable this year was how quickly spots sold out, with Langley School District Foundation executive director Alicia Rempel noting that the tournament sold out seven weeks before the event. Participants including members of the local business community, as well as other community members and District staff.
The tournament is the Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year and raises money for student mental-wellness initiatives. This year’s event raised $107,000, topping last year’s total of just over $90,000.
“Our students’ well-being and mental health are so important, and it’s inspiring to see our community come together once again to support initiatives that make a meaningful difference in the lives of Langley students and help them be successful,” Rempel said.
While the best-ball, shotgun-start tournament is the major draw, the day’s activities also included vendor and sponsor booths at many tee boxes throughout the course; a putting contest on the practice green; as well as a mega putt contest before teeing off, in which hundreds of golfers, each with a numbered ball, all putted at the same time from the fringes of the 18th green, with a prize for whoever could sink the long putt. At the end of the round of golf, a banquet was held, which included dinner, speeches and a moving video about the work that the Foundation does to help students succeed.
One of the speakers was a former student of the Langley School District who shared how they achieved educational and personal success thanks to the help of the Langley School District Foundation and support from the team of administrators, teachers, and staff throughout their learning journey.
