The Week Ahead - June 15-19, 2026
Families of Shortreed,
We hope you had a lovely weekend in this summer heat! June is Pride Month, and we want to acknowledge the importance of our school being a safe and welcoming space for ALL families in our community. Happy Pride Month!
It was an awesome week at Shortreed this past week, with our school hosting both our Diversity Day on Tuesday and Sports Day on Friday.
Students donned their uniforms, costumes, traditional attire, and favourite outfits that represented part of who they are for our Diversity Day on Tuesday. In the days leading up to Tuesday, students worked in class to create their own flags featuring pictures that represented who they are and what they are proud of. We then held our 2026 Proud to be ME Parade, where all the kids were able to see each other and their flags. We then gathered out on the back field for some music and our Shortreed Chant. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate!

Our 2026 Sports Day was a huge success with close to 500 students making their way through the 22 stations. We had a great turnout of families who came to watch and cheer on the kids. The weather was beautiful but not too hot (and just enough to make the activities featuring the water stations that much more fun)! A huge thank you to Shortreed Staff for setting up, and to the 44 BGMS WEB leaders (with the support/organization of Mrs. Chapman) who came out to run all the stations for us.

In the afternoon, our grade 5s had the 2026 Tug-of-War Challenge. The challenges featured some of the longest tug-of-wars we have seen as the students pulled with all their might. In the end, it was Division 3 who came out as the 2026 Grade 5 Champion! They went on to face the Super Staff, who kept their undefeated streak alive. It was a great and fun effort by all the kids (and Super Staff!).

On Thursday, our grade 4 classes all travelled to the Greater Vancouver Zoo to check out all the animals (and dinosaurs) there. The animals were out and about, putting on a bit of a show for the kids, so these Shortreed students were pretty excited to see them. The highlights for many students were the Rhino, Tiger, Grizzly Bears, and Lions. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come out, and to the grade 4 teachers for organizing the trip.

This week, we have the dancers of Kick It Up A Notch Academy of Dance performing for us in the afternoon. This studio features several dancers from Shortreed, so I am sure the gym will be rocking as the kids cheer on their classmates and enjoy the performance.
On Wednesday, our grade 5s will go on their Year-End Celebration trip to the waterslides, then have a pizza lunch back at the school. We also have the 2026 ACSS Grad Walk, where graduates walk through the halls of their former schools. This is a wonderful tradition that connects the grads with former schools and staff while also inspiring our younger students to strive for this as they get older.
Sunday, June 21, is National Indigenous Peoples Day, and we will celebrate it at school on Friday. Classes have been working on bulletin boards focused on the themes of Accomplishments, Inspiration, Resilience, and Success of Indigenous Peoples of Canada. In the afternoon, we will gather on the back field for a Round Dance.
A special thank you to Alder Rentals for their generous donation to our school food program! Their funds will help enhance our breakfast program next year!
At Shortreed, we are honoured to work, learn, and play on the unceded ancestral and traditional lands of the Máthxwi First Nation. We share this not only to acknowledge the lands but also to express our dedication to learning on our journey of truth and reconciliation. This past week, we have seen a key Indigenous teaching in action: nurturing the gifts of our children. Our students had a chance to share who they are, describe their strengths, and the gifts they bring in our Proud to be ME Parade. This day intentionally aligns with National Indigenous History Month so we can bring this teaching to life at our school and ensure that every child feels proud of their gifts and can feel like they belong here.

Information and Reminders:
REMINDER: Transportation Registration 2026-2027
The District is reminding eligible riders to register for transportation for the 2026-2027 school year. To help in our planning and creation of bus routes, registrations for ALL riders must be submitted as soon as possible. The District cannot guarantee approval as the deadline has passed and registration has transitioned to wait-list procedures. New and existing riders can find more information on our Transportation Registration webpage here.
Fraser Health: Same-Day Care Survey
Our community partner, Fraser Health, is seeking information from families regarding health care experiences. To help support improvements in the health care system, please complete this five-minute survey about Same-Day Care in the attached poster or here.

- Our Shortreed Breakfast Program runs each school day from 8:20-8:35. This is free for any students registered, and they must come each day they are in school. To register, click here.
- We know that illnesses occur and absences can happen. If your child is going to be absent, arriving late, away or leaving early due to an appointment, please notify the school of your child’s absence by doing either of the following:
- E-mail SCEAttendance@sd35.bc.ca or call 604-856-4167 and follow the prompts for the attendance line, and leave a message with information including:
- Student First Name and Last Name
- Grade
- Division
- Length of Absence
- Reason (illness, late, appointment, vacation)

Please be aware that if your child is often late, they will miss significant lessons, as much of the literacy and math instruction takes place at the beginning of the day. If your child is ill (flu-like symptoms), please keep them home until they are no longer contagious and can participate in regular school activities. Homework will be provided upon request. Please avoid long absences due to holidays, as this can seriously jeopardize your child’s academic achievement. Homework may not be provided as assignments based on lessons your child missed, as it can be more confusing than helpful. If you will be away for an extended period, please notify the school, as this may impact enrollment.
We STRIVE for FIVE absences or less at Shortreed. We know that children will get sick, but it's important to minimize absences.
- E-mail SCEAttendance@sd35.bc.ca or call 604-856-4167 and follow the prompts for the attendance line, and leave a message with information including:
- There is no parking or pickup/drop-offs in our school parking lot. Please park along 28th Ave or 273rd Street. The Catholic Church allows us to park there for pickup and drop-off. Do not block the driveways of any residences.

Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) Reading Advisor
FVRL Reading Advisor is a free resource for everyone living or studying in communities served by FVRL, including Langley. The Reading Advisor service offers personalized book recommendations for readers of all ages, making it an excellent support for students and staff across the Langley School District. All that is required is to fill out a short form about your reading interests, and trained library staff respond with a customized reading list based on genre, themes, age level, and preferred formats (print, eBook, audiobook, graphic novel, etc.) This is ideal for boosting reading engagement, supporting diverse learning needs, and possibly helping teachers quickly discover high‑quality texts for classroom use. This free community resource extends the capacity of school libraries and connects learners with a broader range of inclusive and accessible materials and would be a great resource to share with students and other staff to help them find some new great reads for over spring break. Happy Reading!
