The Last Week Ahead - June 22-26, 2026
Families of Shortreed,
I hope you had a lovely Father's Day, celebrating the fathers and those who play a fatherly role in your lives!
Today was National Indigenous Peoples Day and we celebrate the strength, resiliency, accomplishments, and success of Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
You have made it to the "Last" Week Ahead newsletter of the year. There will be one final newsletter that comes out next week but this will be the final "Week Ahead" for this year.
We have had another memorable week at Shortreed with some fun and important events and happenings taking place.
On Monday, we had the dancers of Kick It Up A Notch Academy of Dance come to the school to perform for our students. Many current and former Shortreed students showed their dance talents with this local dance studio.

On Wednesday, our grade 5s all went to the Outdoor Experience at the Aldergrove Community Centre to enjoy the day on the waterslides, splash area, wave pool, pool, and lazy river! The kids had a blast in the sunny weather and came back to the school for a pizza lunch on the back field.

On Wednesday afternoon, we welcomed the ACSS 2026 Graduates back to our school for the ACSS Grad Walk. This tradition continued as the grads walked the halls of their former schools, enjoying the moment and receiving cheers, high-fives, and hugs from their former teachers and support staff, along with the younger students at the schools. We know this is meant for the grads, but it sure fills the staff's hearts, too! Congratulations to the ACSS Grad Class of 2026.

On Thursday morning, we had our surprise staff beach dance party on the sidewalk out front of the school. Many staff members donned their best summer shirts, hats, and shorts and danced the morning away, giving high-fives to all the kids as they passed by.

On Friday, we held our School National Indigenous Peoples Day. Every classroom showcased some of their learning on a bulletin board, and then each class went around to see the boards and discuss what they saw. We focused on four key words: strength, resilience, accomplishments, and success. Classes shared Indigenous-inspired artwork, reading reflections, knowledge of the Seven Grandfather Teachings, language, and culture. In the afternoon, we all headed to the back field and listened to a few words about the day and then participated in our own Shortreed community Round Dance. Our students and staff have once again shown the importance of this day on our journey of Truth and Reconciliation.

June finishes off with some important events this week. On Monday afternoon, from 1:00-2:30, we have our 2026 Grade 5 Farewell. This is optional for classes to attend, and all grade 5 parents/caregivers are invited.
On Wednesday, we have our final assembly of the year in the afternoon from 12:45-2:15. We will share some memories of term 3, show our appreciation to some dedicated volunteers and student leaders, honour Mrs. Datema, Mrs. Kirk, and Mrs. North in their retirement, and bid farewell to staff who are leaving.
Thursday is the last day of school this year, with an 11:30 dismissal. Students will receive their report cards and have a chance to connect with staff and classmates before the summer. Friday is an admin day, so staff are in the building, but there is no school for students.
School Supply Lists are now up on our website, so you can purchase separately or order via School Start.
Please note that we do not accept parent requests for next year's class placements.
Report cards cannot be picked up early. If your child is away on Thursday, report cards can be picked up next week.
A reminder that Shortreed is hosting a basketball camp July 6-9 for boys and girls entering grades 4 and 5 next year. Please see below for details.
At Shortreed, we are honoured to work, learn, and play on the unceded ancestral and traditional lands of the Máthxwi First Nation. We share this not only to acknowledge the lands but also to express our dedication to learning on our journey of truth and reconciliation. It was wonderful to walk through our halls and view all the beautiful Indigenous artwork, language, and stories on display. We wanted to make sure that this was a day to celebrate Indigenous strength and resiliency. We start the year learning about residential schools and the attempts to remove the language and culture... and we finish the year with a celebration that, despite historic efforts to erase the language, artwork, and stories, Indigenous Peoples have shown incredible strength to keep going and bring back so much of what was almost completely lost. We raise our hands to the incredible strength and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples of Máthxwi and all of Canada.

Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) Reading Advisor
FVRL Reading Advisor is a free resource for everyone living or studying in communities served by FVRL, including Langley. The Reading Advisor service offers personalized book recommendations for readers of all ages, making it an excellent support for students and staff across the Langley School District. All that is required is to fill out a short form about your reading interests, and trained library staff respond with a customized reading list based on genre, themes, age level, and preferred formats (print, eBook, audiobook, graphic novel, etc.) This is ideal for boosting reading engagement, supporting diverse learning needs, and possibly helping teachers quickly discover high‑quality texts for classroom use. This free community resource extends the capacity of school libraries and connects learners with a broader range of inclusive and accessible materials and would be a great resource to share with students and other staff to help them find some new great reads for over spring break. Happy Reading!
