Superintendent’s Reports

Fine Arts Across the Langley School District

District teacher Jill Steacy and a small group of secondary teachers provided the Board a presentation about Fine Arts Across the District focused on the theme “Imagine.” In the presentation, the group intended to take attendees on a journey through the arts in the District and outline the benefits and impacts that the arts have on students. She started the presentation highlighting the visual arts pieces that were currently being showcased in the school board office lobby. The presentation focused on grade 8-12 arts. Steacy said art education makes the “core values and vision of the District come alive” and showed slides with examples of photos and images of art throughout the District.

Lindsay Mitchell, a secondary teacher from Langley Fine Arts, talked about how art is linked to wonder, creating, critical thinking, and how students through art are “empowered to create.” She shared examples of how the core value of community is demonstrated in schools for example through shows that can “take an audience to another point in time.”

Conrad Dykman, a secondary teacher from RE Mountain Secondary, talked about how art is linked to the core value of courage. As he said, it includes taking creative risks and how arts can focus on the practice of process not just the end result. He noted how arts education is inclusive and accepting and can be a form of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Steacy closed the presentation with a quote recent grad outlining the power of art and how art “can be a way to inhale darkness and exhale light.”
