School Expectations

Communication

Parents and teachers communicate regularly through emails, phone calls, and the student daily agenda planner. This planner is an excellent tool to ensure good communication between teachers and parents. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any time if you have questions or concerns.

Electric Kick Scooters

We are aware that some students who ride their electric kick scooters to school are under the age of 16 and/or may not be following safety rules. We are providing this information to families so that you are aware of the age restrictions and the safety rules at the provincial and Municipal levels.

Electric Kick Scooters are becoming increasingly more popular with students. Additionally, as we can not support students under 16 riding electric kick scooters, we will not be able to store electric kick scooters in or at the school this year. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

  1. What is an electric kick scooter? Electric kick scooters have a simple design and are very much the same scooters that children have used for decades…they require the rider to stand on a narrow platform with one foot and then kick or push off with the other. The difference now is that these kick scooters are electric, they no longer need the rider to push off, and they go at much faster speeds.
  2. In BC, you must be at least 16 years of age and be wearing a helmet to operate an Electric kick scooter, within certain parameters, as per below and in the links.
  3. Electric kick scooters cannot be ridden on public roads, except if the municipality is conducting a pilot. The Township is in the pilot, but the City is not. For more information, please click on the link:

  1. Operators cannot ride an electric kick scooter on sidewalks or in crosswalks, except if a sign or traffic control device allows.
  2. Please refer to the link below for a full list of safety rules for operators.

Parent Volunteers

Parent volunteers are welcome at our school. There are two approaches you may take to provide classroom assistance. We would ask that all volunteers please register at the office.

  1. Talk with the classroom teacher to see how you can help out. We often need help for such things as reading with children, supervising on field trips or helping with special events
  2. If you would like to volunteer for school wide activities such as food days, fundraising, PAC committees or sports events, please contact our PAC President or the Principal. These extra-curricular activities are an important part of school life. Thank you for your help.

School Visitors / Volunteers

Ensuring a welcoming and safe school community is a priority for us.  As such, all visitors or volunteers must sign in at the office upon arrival. Parents and caregivers are also reminded that our school campus is a closed campus. If parents/caregivers need to drop items off for their child(ren) or pick up early, everyone must come to the office directly rather than going to the back of the school during outside play time or the classroom. We will be more than happy to assist everyone at the office directly.

Student Lates

We are asking everyone to do their best to arrive no later than 8:20am to ensure safe arrival prior to our 8:25am start. When students arrive late, they are asked to check in at the office before moving to class so we know they have arrived safely.

Student Absences

If you know your child will be absent, please email PREAttendance@sd35.bc.ca or phone the school office at 604-534-7904. If your child(ren) will be away for an extended period or family holiday, please communicate with your child(ren)'s classroom teacher and the school office prior to the extended absence.

Student Responsibilities

Peterson Road Elementary School values a safe, caring, and inclusive environment for all students that supports student learning. All students also have the right to learn and the responsibility to contribute to a positive and productive climate. We believe that home and school must share the responsibility for teaching children appropriate behaviour. By working together we can increase the probability that students will learn responsibility and respect for others. We ask that staff, students and families review the SD35 Code of Conduct each year.

The following information is included the student agenda:

Behaviour

All students are expected to make choices and behave in alignment with the Langley School District Code of Conduct (https://www.sd35.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/12/AP_350_District_Student_Code_of_Conduct.pdf). Behaviour should be respectful, demonstrating actions that are nurturing and inclusive. As students learn and progress through their years at elementary school, there are rising expectations that reflect individual student development and learning. When students make mistakes or harm others, school discipline will be specific to the student’s experiences, progressive, and restorative to ensure all members of our community are supported and included.

Bikes, Scooters, and Skateboards

Students are welcome to bike or use their scooters to get to school. When arriving on school grounds, students are reminded to dismount and walk their bikes/scooters/skateboards. Students should be wearing helmets and secure their scooters and bikes using a bike lock to the designated bike rack at the front of the school.

Dogs on School Grounds

Family pets are wonderful. We ask that when dogs come with you to pick up or drop off, please have them on leash at all times and wait well away from the building unless they are formally designated as assistance dogs. Also, parents of children without dogs, please remind your children that they should always ask the owner’s permission to pet a strange dog (or even a familiar one in a new situation) before reaching out. If we all work together, we can provide a safe, stress-free environment for all members of our community, human and canine. For further bylaw information please see https://www.tol.ca/en/services/resources/bylaw-services/bylaws/Other-Bylaws/Public-Spaces-Regulation-Bylaw-(No.-5298).pdf (specifically 5.1-5.3)

Dress Guidelines

Students and families are reminded to review the Langley School District Dress Guidelines (https://www.sd35.bc.ca/students-parents/district-code-of-conduct-dress-guidelines/#dress-guidelines). Students clothing should be appropriate for a work environment and students should be able to move comfortably in a variety of settings. Head apparel such as hats and toques are permitted but students will be asked to remove hoodies when entering the building. Students and staff will also be removing hats (and other hat like apparel) for school assemblies and performances. Please remember that except for extreme weather or rain, we go outside to play. Students should be dressed appropriately for outdoor play dependent on the season.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

Each year we conduct multiple fire, earthquake and lockdown drills to review procedures and expectations with students. Please review the attached link for further information.

https://www.sd35.bc.ca/students-parents/safe-inclusive-schools/emergency-preparedness-response/

Early Dismissal

If your child is being picked up early, please inform your child’s teacher ahead of time if possible and be prepared to sign them out at the office. If a student is ill, we will ask that a family member or family friend pick them up directly from the office. Ill students will not be sent home independently.

Fair Notice

School District 35 (Langley) is committed to a safe and supportive environment for all. We take all threatening comments and behaviours seriously. Students, staff and parents should be aware of the District’s Violence Threat Risk Assessment Protocol that can be at the link below and in all school main offices.

https://www.sd35.bc.ca/students-parents/safe-inclusive-schools/fair-notice/

Lates and Absences

Students are expected to be on time and remain at school for the instructional day. Our welcoming bell rings at 8:20am, instructional time begins at 8:25am and students are dismissed at 2:08pm.  We are asking all students to arrive on time so they can fully participate in beginning of the day classroom routines and activities. Regular late arrivals and early dismissals are disruptive to classroom learning. When your child/children are going to be away, please notify the school office at 604-534-7904 or email PREAttendance@sd35.bc.ca prior to 8:50am. All homes will be contacted via an automatic call out if your child is marked absent with an unexcused absence. Thank you for your assistance.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is kept in the hall for mislaid items. We encourage students and parents to check this area by the gym kitchen in the event that something is misplaced. If items are labeled with names, it greatly assists in their speedy return. In December, March and June, with notice, items in the Lost and Found will be donated.

Supervision

Morning supervision will be present beginning at 8:00am each morning, at recess, lunch, and afterschool until 2:18pm. Students should proceed home directly after dismissal unless supervised by an adult. Students who have not been picked up by 2:18pm will be directed to the office and wait in the front foyer for pick up.

Technology

We know that families like to be connected with their children and we do use technology (computers/ipads) in class for instructional activities where appropriate and with teacher supervision. Upon arrival on school grounds, students will store their cell phones in their backpack (and turned off) for the school day (including recess and lunch) and they can use them again when departing school grounds. We strongly encourage students to keep personal digital devices at home. If families need to communicate with their child, please call the school office. Additionally, students can use the office phone to call home when needed. If students are not well, students should come to the office where staff can provide support. Please note that recording in-school activities of students or staff without consent of school administration is not permitted. Langley Schools and Peterson Road Elementary School is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen devices. For additional information on the use of personal digital devices in schools, please go to https://www.sd35.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/06/AP_350_zAppendix_A_Student-Code-of-Conduct.pdf

Visitors

All Visitors are required to check in at the office. During instructional time, visitors/caregivers will be asked to wait at the office if dropping off and/or picking up students. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Volunteers

We welcome volunteers and parent drivers! Adult volunteers are expected to follow the District Code of Conduct while helping either in the building or on an fieldtrip. If volunteering in the building, volunteers are asked to sign in on arrival and sign out at departure and wear a visitors sticker. If you are interested in volunteering or driving for frieldtrips or sports teams, please contact the school office for the appropriate forms to fill out and submit.
