IDEA Summit
Congratulations to Irene, Jace, and Mathias for representing our school so well at the IDEA Summit on Tuesday. Irene sold almost all of her Special Money Collectors, and then donated overstock to her friends back at the school. Jace's Cases were in such high demand that the school is getting phone calls to see if he has any more to sell. And Mathias told me he should have made his price higher, because he sold out of his special F1F@ foosball tables in minutes. Mathias also hit on a great lesson: 'Everything can be recycled, no matter what it is.'

Upcoming Reunification Drill
On the afternoon of Friday, June 5, we will be conducting an Earthquake - Reunification Drill. All students will duck-cover-hold and evacuate, and we will set up at least a part of our anticipated emergency response plan. Students in Ms. Warwick's class (and their siblings) will then be dismissed family-by-family to an emergency pick-up contact so we can practice our planned procedures with an eye to fine-tuning them. Other classes will return to their rooms and will be dismissed at the normal time. We are grateful to Ms. Warwick, her students and their families for being our test group. In the event of a real major emergency, we would be dismissing everyone in the school one-by-one and only to one of the pick-up contacts designated on their emergency release forms.
Kindergarten Welcome (repeat)
Every year, we welcome the incoming Kindergarten students to a special event. This year, that day will be on the afternoon of June 2. Kindergarten families of this year, please note that your kids will be dismissed at 12:33 that day so we can meet our incoming Kindies. Everyone, please note that the parking lot and driveways are likely to be extra-full that afternoon.
Safety First - Windows
So the other day, I was leaning out an upstairs window at home, looking at the wasps' nest forming way out of reach, when I realized how precarious my situation was. Then, by complete coincidence, I got an email from Fraser Health that contained this reminder about window safety and kids. This stuff is important. In one school community I worked in, a child had a very bad fall out an upper-storey window, so it does, indeed, happen. With all the beautiful, tall homes in our community, I thought this was worth sharing. Image source: Fraser Health.

What? More Safety? Wildfire Smoke
Wildfire season in BC is here (early). There have been several fires already this season between Hope and Vancouver, so I thought I'd share this resource about wildfire smoke. We monitor air quality in real time in fire season to be sure going outside for playtimes is the right thing to do. And there is lots families can do to protect themselves too, if the smoke gets bad.

Quote of the Week

Something to Read (or watch)
I got thinking about the Eagle Cams again this weekend after I saw an Osprey. No direct connection there, but brains can be funny. And I got thinking about how the two both fish, but with very different strategies (ah, there's the connection!) So I wonder who's the more successful....
Oh, and the nest cams? The ones in BC don't seem be doing very well this year, with a number of empty nests, but this one in California, and this one in Alaska are doing fine. I did find one Canadian camera that has an eagle in the nest, at least.
