Bears Beat - November 2, 2025
Information
Lost and Found
I thought I'd seen the biggest coat collection ever in a Lost & Found by October last year at my old school, but the Bears have surpassed it! We have so, so many coats, hoodies, sweaters and jackets in the Lost & Found. Someone must be cold. Please check the lost and found for your child's items (or have them check) in the next little while.
Student Inclusive Conferences
Your child's first formal report for the year will be a conference where the student and teacher will lead you through some of the evidence of their learning. You can see a bit about these conferences here. Appointment booking will open later this week. Two dates of note will be Wednesday, November 26, when students do not attend except for those with conference appointments and then only for the duration of the appointment, and Thursday, November 27 when students will be dismissed 2 hours early, at 12:33, to accommodate some more conference times. You can also expect to receive a Family Reflection form to fill so that your goals and observations can also be incorporated into the conference.
Extended Absences
If you are planning an extended absence (over 3 weeks), please fill out the following form and email to JDEattendance@sd35.bc.ca . Also please note that teachers are not expected to provide work for students absent on family vacations.
Moving/Withdrawing
Please let us know if you are moving - Parents are asked to inform the school as soon as possible if/when they know that their children will be leaving our school or not returning in the fall. We do have a wait list for families in our neighbourhood. Please complete our withdraw form and return it to the office or email it to cdavies@sd35.bc.ca
Open Parachute
The Langley School District works with an organization called Open Parachute to support our Human & Social Development pillar. This program also has a set of useful resources for caregivers. You can see them here.
Driveways and Rainydays
On rainy days, pickup has been getting very busy. To help keep everyone safe and moving, please note the following:
- There is no parking except in marked spots. This particularly means you should not park or wait along the left-side curb at the south end of the school.
- Don't double-park.
- When the parking lot is full, we close it. You may see us let in select vehicles as they have kids with mobility challenges and will be using the wheelchair parking zone.
- Whenever possible, walk, even in the rain. Alternately, parking on the street will get you back on the road faster than being in the parking lot.
- If the driveways become clogged to the point of being unsafe, Mr. Oliver will close the gates at the street to allow traffic to clear.
- Please, if you are in the parking lot waiting (in a marked spot, of course), shut the car off. We are a no-idling zone.
- If you are walking, please use the sidewalks, rather than walking down the blacktop. If people are backing out of parking spots, you are quite hard to see, and are unexpected.
Remembrance Day Poppy Campaign
It is a long-standing tradition for schools to support our veterans and the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion. Once again this year, our school will be receiving a poppy for every student and distributing them to classes. We will continue to collect funds this year in support of the Legion’s Poppy Campaign but kindly ask students and their families to donate online via School Cash Online:
https://sd35.schoolcashonline.com/
Please do not send cash or cheques with your child to school. If you need assistance accessing School Cash Online, please contact the school office.
We appreciate your generosity. As always, our school is committed to educating our community about the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day.

Since we've seen the neighbourhood coyote (a student tells me its name is Bob) a few times, I thought it might be good to share a bit of info about coexisting with them (the coyotes, not the student). Having coyotes around in our area is inevitable; they're a fantastically adaptable animal. It's also actually good, as they eat rats and mice (and every neigbourhood has those outside). There are some good hints here, though and reminders for the kids. The coyotes generally can be scared away. The guide does remind us not to throw things at them, though.
The Canadian Virtual War Memorial is a national registry to honour the more than 118000 Canadians who have served since Confederation. I used it to find my Mom's uncle, whom she never met because his plane crashed in 1944. Maybe you have family members listed there too.
