What an Amazing Day!

On May 8th the Langley school district hosted our first IDEA Summitt. IDEA stands for Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship, and Altruism. The event was hosted at the Langley Events Centre where 75 booths were set up in a Maketplace/Showcase that included entrepreneurs, socialpreneurs, Powerplay, and design challenges. Students that pitched their products and services ranged from grades four to twelve.

Throughout the day school buses transported students from throughout the District in three shifts in order to take in the event. Over 2400 students attended!

In addition, many parents took in the day and also 26 business and community members volunteered their time as IDEA mentors. The mentors provide feedback to all of the 75 entrepreneurs and helped select five scholarship winners from the Pitch Challenge. A total of $8000 in scholarships were awarded with 25 percent of the funds targeted to charities as chosen by each of the recipients. Thank you to our business community for their support in providing these scholarships.

The day also featured a keynote address from Dr. Sarah Lubik, Simon Fraser University’s first Director of Entrepreneruship, named one of Business in Vacnouver’s Top 40 under 40, and an Innovation Leader by the government of Canada. Thank you to the over 50 staff and student volunteers that helped make the day possible. The day served not only as a great showcase of student innovation and altruism but also as an excellent example of the re-designed curriculum – applying student learning to an area of passion.

I look forward to enjoying this event again next year and continuing to support the development of the entrepreneurial mindset in our youth.
