Make sure to get out to vote!

The Township of Langley is busy organizing the School Trustee by-election to be held February 27, 2021. I would like to take this time to thank all seven of the candidates for having the courage to run for public office: Joel Neufeld, Holly Dickinson, Alex Joehl, Grant Gilmour, Stacey Wakelin, Charlie Fox, and Phyllis Heppner.

We need outstanding individuals to step up to advocate for and to serve our community. It is never easy entering the arena of politics – despite best efforts there is rarely one hundred percent consensus on any issue. Thus, one must be thick skinned. The role of school trustee involves creating and overseeing the strategic plan, providing financial oversight, undertaking policy work, and collaborating with the District Leadership Team to provide a safe and rewarding educational experience for all students. It is a complex role that requires thoughtful work to allocate our resources in the best way possible to serve the entire District and not solely special interest groups or sections of the community – quite the challenge, especially during a pandemic!

I would like to encourage all eligible voters to exercise their right to vote. We should never take the democratic rights we enjoy for granted. Make sure to research each candidate and make an informed choice. I wish all the candidates the very best in their campaigns and look forward to working with the newly elected trustee as part of our team.
