  • 2. What do you see as the long term benefits of Reading Recovery®?

    • Loving reading as much as I do. My older son (16 years) is constantly reading.
    • Confidence and a good strong start to reading and writing.
    • Life skills. Reading is what makes a person more knowledgeable, whether a bathroom sign or Hemmingway!
    • xxxxx will come up to reading Grade level and will have gained high self-esteem in achieving a goal.
    • I used to think of xxxxx as someone who doesn’t take chances unless he’s sure of the outcome. After being in Reading Recovery®, not only did his reading ability increase, his confidence grew in leaps and bounds and keeps on getting better all the time.
    • Very, very important to solve the problems now rather than struggling throughout the school years.
    • Our child has learned strategies that he can use to become a life long learner. He has tried to share some of these strategies with other students.
    • Reading is the building block for learning anything and to be able to read at her expected level or higher will give her confidence in all of her schooling and we think she will benefit greatly from this.
    • I think that without the Reading Recovery® programme xxxxx would be struggling and would not be ready for Grade Two. He now has a chance to feel that he is where he should be academically and therefore school work will not be such a chore.
    • Literally my daughter probably would not have passed on to Grade Two. She was nowhere near up to speed with the class, and though I tried, I could not stir the interest in her.
    • Child’s reading capabilities will not fall behind rest of class.
    • I definitely would love to see this programme continue in our school, and feel it should be an option in every school, because it helps the children to realize that if they work hard enough on something that they will eventually succeed.
    • Our son has received a boost in his self-esteem and now enjoys being challenged in his reading and other skills.
    • I think its great. Children need to know that there is extra support when they need it.
    • Helping children to become strong readers early helps them in their understanding and their ability to learn all the other subjects. Reading really is the base for all learning.
    • Well to see the difference from the beginning of the year to now. He is sounding the words out in his head instead of guessing. I think xxxxx just needs a little one-on-one. He is doing so much better.
    • xxxxx enjoys reading now, has confidence and is attempting early chapter books. It has helped with math also, as he can now read the instructions himself.
    • My daughter will be able to use the skills she has learned to advance her reading.
    • xxxxx has a strong grasp of reading basics that should help him all the way through school. Now that he’s not as frustrated, I think he is more willing to learn new school work.
    • Long term benefits would be my child not afraid to try harder books and to not be afraid to ask for help if he is stuck.
    • xxxxx is now up to par with his class. He is an equal instead of behind. Once a child with a learning disability, xxxxx has been shown that he doesn’t seem to have one. Hopefully he’ll keep up his enthusiasm for reading.
    • I see the long term benefits of Reading Recovery® as being that of gaining the confidence and receiving the necessary groundwork of reading. Our son now has received the basic knowledge of reading, sentence building and recognition.
    • I feel xxxxx will continue to improve on his reading. The extra help he received has given him the confidence to try new books.
    • Because of this programme my child has now caught up to a level with the rest of his class and not fallen behind. Some children fall so far behind, they never catch up. Also because of this programme he has learnt proper reading habits that he will carry with him the rest of his life.
    • That my son will pick up books on his own and read.
    • Our oldest son had the programme 3 years ago. We see their love of reading, the stories become alive and they read of their own initiative.
    • Nice compliment to the Writing Road to Reading programme which we teach at home. Some kids need more than one approach to draw from.
    • Helping children develop good reading habits, and skills. Learning to like reading, because they have been taught the right way in how to read.
    • Getting a grasp of reading now will benefit our child throughout his entire school experience and for the rest of life he will have a love of reading and learning new information from books.
    • A solid foundation for xxxxx’s reading.
    • Reading Recovery® has long term benefits in many areas, most importantly it has taught my child to be able to “problem solve” when she becomes stuck on her words.
  • 3. How do you feel about early intervention now that your child has received this support?

    • At first we were hesitant because we did not know very much about the programme, but that quickly changed as we saw the improvements in our child’s reading.
    • We feel the earlier the better as teaching them before they develop too many bad habits or before you lose their interest due to frustration over not being able to read comfortably.
    • I am glad that xxxxx was chosen for the Reading Recovery® programme because he now has a chance to excel as his confidence has improved and he feels good about reading.
    • I think it is superb. It would be a crime not to have the program. All children don’t learn the same way or at the same rate.
    • I see it as a positive. This intervention is needed.
    • I am very grateful for the intervention, as I think reading is so very essential for everyone. I am glad my son can read on his own now at this young age rather than be pushed along and not find out about it until much later on!
    • We have always supported any programme that ensures children do not fall behind their peers.
    • I’m very pleased and xxxxx’s progress is great!
    • I see dramatic improvement in my child’s reading ability.
    • The earlier the child gets the help, the better off they are in all subjects as they don’t fall behind their peers and start feeling ‘dumb’. I wish my older son had had this help in Grade One because I feel he is still struggling with reading comprehension and doesn’t enjoy reading as much as he could.
    • As with my other children, early intervention has proven to be a positive step forward.
    • I am so happy he got the extra support.
    • I was happy intervention was early and staff worked hard to bring my child to a comfortable reading level.
    • I feel early intervention is imperative. xxxxx would be way behind if it hadn’t been for Mrs. xxxxx and Reading Recovery®.
    • I definitely feel that early intervention is a must!! If it wasn’t for the one-on-one assistance that my son received, he would have been unable to cope with the Grade One curriculum and keep up with his classmates. My son feels very confident and successful as he heads towards Grade Two.
    • He was excited to read when he was in the programme. He would bring the books home and in the evening he couldn’t wait to read to one of us!
    • My child went from a Level 5 to a Level 16 in a matter of months. He was so excited everyday to tell us which level he had reached. The highlight of his day was to be able to go and read in the program. He now has an enthusiasm about reading as well as a sense of accomplishment. He loved being in the programme, and I feel it has made him a more confident reader. He no longer shies away form books with too many words. I see a great change in my child because of this programme – more confidence, always wanting to read signs and other things in his surroundings, and the remarkable advancement in such a short time.
    • Opens the door to infinite opportunities, especially as a 6 year old – his imagination is huge and the stories tap into this – its fun!
    • To be able to share her “fav.” stories with our family, especially her younger brother.
    • It was a highlight for xxxxx. She would do her homework willingly and she learned to read!!
    • My son wanting to read because he can read now too.
    • It really makes him feel really good, and to be able to keep up with his class.
    • It would probably be going from frustration with reading to enjoying and being excited about reading. The programme was fun and exciting and he looked forward to it each day.
    • Confidence that he could read. Going from reading minimally to reading fluently.
    • I think the most significant experience of Reading Recovery® is the one-on-one time your child receives. Along with the hands on learning, building sentences, and using the board to manipulate words and letters.
    • I cannot say enough about this programme. I am sure every parent tries to do their best to read and help teach their children how to read, but in this society where most parents are working outside the home, I think this programme helps them out tremendously. Every parent feels guilty not spending enough reading time with their children and knowing that this programme is provided puts our minds at ease. The children get excited, making the parents feel it too and therefore taking that extra time to want to help them to reach their next goal – get to another level! I feel that teachers in the classrooms cannot always help out those in need of extra help because of class sizes etc., therefore our children are not left behind or falling through the cracks because of this programme. How often does it happen that a teacher finds out a Grade Four child cannot read properly?
    • Thankful that xxxxx had the opportunity to get the one-on-one learning he needed.
    • You have to catch these children early before they can never catch up. The earlier, the better. If you teach them to love to read – and they do learn this – they carry it through all their school years. Reading, I think, is the key to all learning and if your child is a good reader and loves to read he will find it so much easier the rest of his school years. Teach children early to love reading – and reading is cool. That is what this programme has taught me and my son.
    • Great! This programme has brought the whole world of books into his life – he can experience anything and imagine everything.
    • Very pleased. I feel it is important to help the child early on with reading difficulties.
    • I think all children in need of help to read should have early intervention.
    • It’s really great. It will help him to develop skills that he will remember in the higher grades at school.
    • It is crucial!
    • I strongly agree this is the correct approached. I am so grateful for the help xxxxx has received.
    • I think that early intervention with this programme was crucial for my child. It was evident that she was learning at a slower rate than most of her class, (even in kindergarten) and I’m certain she would not have excelled as far as she did without this programme.
    • I feel a programme as great as Reading Recovery® is, it wouldn’t matter, if the quality of instruction, organization communication with parents, and the positive feedback Mrs. xxxxxx gives to the students wasn’t there.
    • Without the help of Mrs. xxxxxx my son wouldn’t be where he is today in respects to reading and spelling – he loves to read aloud and she gave us the tools to help him get there!
    • Great programme!
    • We are so glad our son participated in this programme. We saw enormous improvements in his reading ability in a short time span, and saw his interest level go up and his frustration level go down. He is now excited to read to us, whereas before it was a chore. We are very pleased with the Reading Recovery® programme.
    • Reading Recovery® was an excellent learning tool for my child. I was highly sceptical of her learning to read without a “phonics” programme but have been left with no doubts as to the ability of this programme.
  • 4. What do you know about reading and writing that you didn't know before your child became involved in the Reading Recovery® programme?

    • That every child is different and with the right positive help and support from the teachers and parents anything can be accomplished.
    • I had no idea how hard reading and writing can be for a child. It can be sooooo scary and overwhelming, not to mention frustrating.
    • Breaking down words, skills to improve reading speed and phonics.
    • That not all children can learn to read by sounding out words.
    • After sitting in on a class we have learned some different ideas on how to assist our son in reading.
    • We really were impressed with the knowledge and expertise of Mrs. xxxxx. She was able to break down the complex process into a number of activities that kept our child engaged. We also appreciate that his teacher made a tremendous effort to choose books and activities that would interest our child.
    • Through the programme I have seen what one-on-one attention can accomplish in such a short time. I see that reading and writing taught in the right way can be fun for the child.
    • That the programme existed. I think it is fabulous!
    • Mainly the level of reading and writing from when I went to school. Lot more advanced.
    • I did not know just how ‘essential’ this programme is, now that I have had the experience to see it.
    • That the learning of these skills is dependent upon the instruction being tailored to meet the needs of the students.
    • I can only judge by the improvement I see in my child in such a short period of time.
    • I know that a little one-on-one really pays off. xxxxx has come a long way.
    • If you catch the problem at an early stage it can be corrected. This definitely helps in the long term.
    • There are so many rules to the English language. (These are things we all take for advantage). Unless you are qualified it would be hard to teach such a complex language.
    • I know now that you don’t assume anything from one child to the next – all learn at a different pace. Reading needs to be repetitive for those who are weak – and require a one-on-one setting to keep one’s attention. Sentences need to be broken down into words and sounds to understand how they are built. How the reading sounds and expressions are important.
    • First off that sounding out words is not the best way. His spelling is coming and his journal is full of great stories!
    • As this is our second child through the programme I knew what to expect and appreciated the effort put in to help our children.
    • Before coming to (this school) the only form of learning to read I had experienced was with phonics! My older daughter learned this way and learned very quickly. This new way of teaching was a very big concern for me when my child first started the programme because I knew she was not staying with class level and I voiced this continuously to her teachers. Understanding how Reading Recovery® worked by sitting in on lessons was a big reassurance, and I was really impressed.
  • 5. Additional comments:

    • I am so grateful and happy I was given the opportunity to be in this programme. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and hope xxxxx will be allowed to continue participating in this if need be.
    • I found a tremendous improvement in xxxxx’s reading skills. I’m impressed by Mrs. xxxxx’s ability to individualize lessons to xxxxx’s unique needs.
    • I believe that going to Reading Recovery® has helped xxxxx in more than one way. His confidence has increased and has spilled into other areas of his life.
    • We thank Mrs. xxxxx. She is a wonderful lady and we have seen significant improvement in our sons reading over the last few months. Thanks for all her support.
    • We believe any child would benefit from being in a programme like this.
    • We are very happy that this programme was available for xxxxx and would like to thank you for helping her and us to get her reading on track.
    • I hope this programme continues so that it can help other children who may need the extra help in learning how to read.
    • Please continue funding for this programme. I would hate to think where my daughter would be without it.
    • Overall I feel xxxxx’s reading and writing was greatly improved along with her personal skills. xxxxx’s behaviour was greatly improved also.
    • Before my child was in this programme it took a great deal of time and effort to get him to try and read a story at night. Now that he has completed the reading programme he wants to read all the time. Thank you so very much.
    • Reading Recovery® has done wonders for our son. It is imperative that it not only be kept but expanded in the future, for there are many children like our son that will benefit from the programme.
    • I think the Reading Recovery® programme is just excellent! Thank you.
    • xxxxx had difficulties with all of her subjects but now that she is reading better all of the other subjects are improving drastically as well. Her spelling has improved of course but so has her math. She has even started to take more care and pride in the simplest of tasks like colouring. I truly believe that now that she has more confidence in her reading ability she is working harder at everything. As far as answering these questions, we only see what our child brings home and that is only a tiny portion of the programme I’m sure.
    • Just want to say thank you for your support. We all appreciate it. Thanks.
    • I believe it would be detrimental to many children to have this very important programme cut. I believe the one-on-one received by a trained teacher is not replaceable. I have read to all my children from a very young age. My daughter developed great without extra help. My first son still struggles and I believe with all my heart the Reading Recovery® programme has helped xxxxx be a better all around student by developing his reading.
    • This made such a big difference for xxxxx. His older brother struggled with reading in Grade One at a different school without Reading Recovery®. He had such a hard time in Grade Two. He struggled something terrible and I didn’t have the tools to help him through. Thank goodness we switched to (xxxxx school) and had two great teachers for his Grade Two year. Thank you.
    • Thank you to the staff that helped my child not fall behind in his reading. The extra effort is worth it all.
    • My husband and I both appreciate the attention received by both his Grade One teacher and the Reading Recovery® Teacher. Both worked hard at getting him in the programme and we are very thankful for this.
