Orange Shirt Day is recognized across the district

October 2, 2018

Orange Shirt Day was recognized across the district last Friday, September 28. Students and staff dressed in orange shirts to share the message that “All Students Matter”.

Orange Shirt Day happens every September 30, and is a day of remembrance for the First Nations children who attended Residential Schools. There they were stripped of their culture and language, and suffered numerous abuses.

The story of the Orange Shirt comes from Phyllis Webstad, who had her favourite orange shirt taken away on the first day of school. It was never returned. Phyllis visited Langley last month to share her story and her new book The Orange Shirt Story, which recounts her experiences in Residential Schools.
