Re: New Middle School Naming and Catchments on the Willoughby Slope for September 2019

The Langley School District is proud to announce that the new middle school in Willoughby opening September 2019 will be named Peter Ewart Middle School. Mr. Peter Ewart was a distinguished and internationally renowned artist whose work often focused on the Canadian landscape. Mr. Ewart lived and worked in Langley for many years. It is noteworthy that this is the first Langley school to be named for an accomplished artist and the Langley School Board believes Mr. Ewart’s contributions to the arts and dedication to education will serve well as inspiration for the students and staff of Peter Ewart Middle School.

At the September 25, 2018 Regular Board Meeting, Trustees announced the name of the new middle school and the catchment boundaries for both Peter Ewart Middle and Yorkson Creek Middle schools. The District has been working closely with the community and administrators to create new catchment boundaries to incorporate a second middle school on the Willoughby Slope. Staff recommended that both Willoughby middle schools support the pillars of middle school and, therefore, both schools will include grade 6, 7 and 8 students upon opening in September 2019. Trustees also approved the creation of a District Transition Committee to support a successful transition for students.

Please find below, a written description of the approved middle school catchment boundaries and the wording of the subsequent motion regarding transition of your students. The District Transition Committee will continue to take feedback from parents regarding transition through PAC representatives on the committee and/or through feedback@sd35.bc.ca.
