Foundation Golf Tournament Tees off for Student Wellness

It was a great day for golf this week at Newlands Golf and Country Club, as nearly 150 golfers teed off for a great cause at the Langley School District Foundation’s annual tournament.  

The scramble-style tournament featured groups from the local business community, as well as community members, volunteers and District staff. In total, $83,000 was raised for the Foundation – $8,000 more than the goal organizers had set before the first group teed off.  

The funds raised will support student mental-health initiatives, including one-on-one counselling services for students unable to afford it. As of the end of last school year, the Foundation had covered the costs of 890 private counselling sessions, said executive director Alicia Rempel.  

“These sessions offer immediate, crucial support for students when it is needed the most,” Rempel said. “This program is our fastest growing need, requiring $150,000 annually to ensure our students receive the mental health support they need to thrive in school and in life.”  

 In addition to the best-ball style golf tournament, Wednesday’s event featured vendors and sponsors at tee boxes throughout the course, with food, beverages and games at many of them.  

After the on-course action wrapped up, participants went inside for dinner and a silent auction, which also helped raise money for the cause.  

The tournament is one of the biggest annual fundraisers for the Foundation. 

“I love seeing our community come together in a fun way and in doing so, supporting Langley students,” Rempel said.
