The Regular Meeting of the Langley Board of Education begins at 7:00 PM on December 15, 2020.

Announcement

Board Chair Rod Ross announced the name of the new school in the SW Yorkson area of Langley. He announced the new name as Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary, named after recently retired, long-time District Teacher in the Langley School District. Ross read a statement on behalf on the Board outlining Robins’ impact on the District and Indigenous communities. He remarked Robins builds people up and strengthens relationships. Donna Gabriel Robins was in attendance to hear the announcement. She shared her feelings of pride and thanked her family for their support over the years. She commented on the great work of District staff on Reconciliation and supporting students. Trustees shared their thoughts on the exciting news for the District.

Superintendent’s Reports

Superintendent’s Report – COVID-19 – Update

Superintendent Gord Stewart provided an update on COVID-19 and outlined the latest number of cases (55 to date) at 27 school sites. Stewart noted more cases were at R.E. Mountain Secondary and D.W. Poppy Secondary. He informed the Board that the District will be relaying communications to the community regarding preparations during Winter Break. He explained parents will be notified about the following topics including the COVID-19 early notification process and planning for a potential extended break. He then shared a video depicting all the work that has been taking place over the last few months regarding student learning, community building, and overcoming challenges.

Anti-Racism Working Group

Superintendent Gord Stewart reported on the development of the District’s Anti-Racism Working Group which is made up of team of administrators and leadership. He explained the background and how it started at the end of the school year stemming from anti-racism protests occurring in Canada and the U.S. He acknowledged the need for work in anti-racism in the District and served notice to the community that work will continue on to tackle it.

He outlined some of the challenges and noted it’s a topic which is difficult and uncomfortable to talk about. Moving forward, the working group will work on a number of goals and strategies. One of the first actions for the District is the announcing of a new role, District Principal of Wellness and Diversity, which is being undertaken by Magdy Ghobrial, who will be leaving R.E. Mountain Secondary for this appointment. Ghobrial was in attendance to share his experiences with the topic of racism at R.E. Mountain, including receiving and reciting a powerful letter from a student. Vice-Principal of D.W. Poppy Aaron Powell and member of the Anti-Racism Working Group shared his experiences at his school including an emotional story from one of his students.

Board Policies and District Administrative Procedures – Notice of Motion Returns

Recommendation: That the Board of Education rescinds all current Board Policies, Regulations, and Administrative Procedures effective December 15, 2020.

Recommendation: That the Board of Education approves the Board Policy Handbook effective December 15, 2020.

Recommendation: That the Board of Education acknowledges receipt of the Administrative Procedures Manual for information purposes only on December 15, 2020
