Long-Term Facilities Plan – Middle Schools Update May 30, 2017

The Board of Education passed 7 motions related to the Long-Term Facilities Plan and the Middle School Consultation process recently undertaken with the Langley Schools community at their Regular Meeting Tuesday, May 30, 2017.

In short, the Board passed the following recommendations :

  • In the Brookswood community, the Board has directed staff to establish a Transition Committee that will report back to the Board with a detailed plan to implement a middle school model in the Brookswood community once the Brookswood-Fernridge Community Development Plan is approved by the Township of Langley.
  • The Board approved the establishment of a Grade 6 to 12 middle/secondary model at the DW Poppy Secondary facility and directed staff to establish a Transition Committee to report back to the Board by December 2017.
  • Staff will report back to the Board by December 2017 on facility implications for the elementary schools in the DW Poppy zone in transitioning to a Kindergarten to Grade 5 model.
  • The Board directed staff to include representation from Coghlan Elementary as part of the DW Poppy Transition Committee and to report back to the Board in December 2017 with an implementation plan to transition Coghlan to a K-5 model.
  • Staff will also report back to the Board in December 2017 on the facilities implications of transitioning Coghlan to a K-5 elementary school.
  • In the WGSS community, staff was directed to establish a Transition Committee to report back to the Board in March 2018 on the implementation plan of establishing the middle school model in that community which will include timeline, possible facility changes and education programming implications.
  • Lastly, the Board recommended that staff request of the Ministry of Education the capital funding in the Five-Year Capital Plan submission for the acquisition of a site for construction of a middle school.

    Letters have been distributed to the Brookswood, Walnut Grove, DW Poppy and Fundamental (click to view letters) communities on December 7th, 2016. The letters outline the next steps in the community consultation process for the transition to middle school programming, including dates of individual community consultations.

    LTFP Middle School Programming - PACs and Principals 2016Nov23_page1Wednesday, November 3rd a small group meeting of DPAC members, School PAC members, District staff and School Administrators was held to engage a small group to discuss the plan for the upcoming community consultations in the Brookswood, Walnut Grove and DW Poppy school communities.

    As you may be aware, the District has a Long Term Facilities Plan that needs to be updated. Our plan is to complete the process by June 30, 2017. One of the recommendations in the current plan speaks to middle grades programming across the District:

    It is recommended that School District no. 35 (Langley):

    2. Commences a stakeholder consultation process to discuss middle grades education with a potential follow-up process on middle grades configuration for the Brookswood, D.W. Poppy, and Walnut Grove areas.

    Dates for further community consultations in each of the affected communities will be confirmed shortly but have been set tentatively for:

    • Brookswood: January 17, February 22, and April 26, 2017
    • DW Poppy: January 11, February 9, and April 19, 2017
    • Fundamental: January 26, March 2, and May 8, 2017
    • Walnut Grove: January 31, February 27, and May 2, 2017

    The Final report on the Transition to Middle School Programming will be presented at the Board of Education Regular Meeting on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
