Re: Eligibility Requirements for Attending Yorkson Creek Middle School- Effective September 2016
In response to potential overcrowding at the Yorkson Creek Middle School, the Langley School District will no longer be able to accommodate any non-catchment area child or non-school district child as part of the middle school intake for the 2016-2017 school year.
Section 7 4.1 of the School Act defines a “non-catchment area child” as a person of school age, resident in the school district, but not a resident in the catchment area of a school. A “non-school district child” is defined as a person of school age, resident in British Columbia, but not resident in the school district.
The catchment area in this case comprises the school boundaries of the five feeder elementary schools: Langley Meadows, R.C. Garnett, Willoughby, Richard Bulpitt and Lynn Fripps. Exceptions to this rule will be students that have older siblings attending Yorkson Creek Middle School orR. E. Mountain Secondary in September 2016.
According to School District Policy #7008 – Student Registration:
After enrolment of continuing students, and if the required space and facilities are determined to be available, applications from new students will be accepted in the following order of priority provided that application deadlines and other requirements have been met:
i) a catchment area child;
ii) a non-catchment area child;
iii) a non-school district child.
Parents of non-catchment area children and non-school district children attending grade 4 and below in a Willoughby area school next year will need to make other arrangements to attend a school for grade 6 outside of the Willoughby area. Unless circumstances change and another middle school is developed in the Willoughby area, there will no longer be room to accommodate non-catchment area and non-school district children at Yorkson Creek Middle School as of the 2016-2017 school year.
By issuing this notice 11ow the Langley School District is providing time for families in these circumstances to make other arrangements for their children prior to the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
Please contact your school principal if you have questions.
