DISTRICT LEARNING COMMONS

The DLC is your one stop shop for useful resources to enhance your teaching available to all school staff in the Langley School District. You don’t need to buy everything for all of your lessons yourself! You can check it out in person in the basement of the School Board Office or have kits and resources delivered directly to your school! We deliver and pick up all the items you request through district mail twice per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Links to all the info below:

Stuart Gibbs is a New York Times bestselling author known for his humorous and suspenseful books for intermediate and middle level readers. His books are known for high interest and circulation in our libraries. The kit contains 6 copies of each title and would suit anywhere from grades 4-8.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Interested in Becoming a Mentor? We have many brand-new or early career teachers looking for a mentor. We need mentors at all grade levels but especially primary (K-5) and middle (6-8). We are looking for experienced teachers with five or more years in the profession to support and guide newer educators as they transition into their roles. Please fill out the Mentor Information Sheet here. Once completed, please email it to teachermentorship@sd35.bc.ca to join our program!

New to the District or a New Role? If you’re a newer teacher looking for mentorship, please fill out the Mentee Information Sheet here. Once completed, please email it to teachermentorship@sd35.bc.ca to join our program! 

Time Commitment: Mentors and Mentees need to commit to ONE 45-minute learning-focused conversation every 3-5 weeks. There are optional workshops, networking and learning sessions available, as well as many perks such as the Mentorship Retreat, giveaways, and resources.

Mentorship Kits: Join the Mentorship Program to borrow Classroom Library Kits to borrow for the school year to help build a library for your students to borrow books and increase the love of literacy.  Currently available at K-2 and 6-8 grade levels. Email us with your request.

This fall the Fraser Institute is bringing their High School Field Trips to Vancouver and New Westminster. These free one-day field trips are a great way to get students to engage with the economic concepts they learn in class through hands on activities, while also encouraging students to consider how economic concepts are reflected in their own thinking and daily interactions. Imagine your students learning how a chocolate-eating contest demonstrates marginal utility or discovering the differences between economic systems by making hats in a friendly competition. We bring economics to life with pop culture videos, interactive activities, and opportunities for students to collaborate in smaller groups.

The Fraser Valley Regional Library is sharing a live, virtual program as part of Media Literacy Week with MediaSmarts. The program is designed for children in grades 4 and 5. 
It's called "Break the Fake: What’s Real Online?­" and is taking place on October 29, 2025 via Zoom. The workshop empowers students to critically evaluate online content. Using the house hippo video as a springboard, participants explore how images and stories can be misleading—and learn how to separate fact from fiction online. Following the workshop, educators have the option of using the house hippo colouring sheet to reinforce the learnings from the session.

BBLP is a free financial literacy program offering 45 minute workshops (plus Q&A) designed to align with BC curriculum goals. Developed by UFV students and reviewed by UFV faculty, the workshops cover practical and engaging topics such as positive spending, setting a budget, comparing debit and credit cards and understanding taxes.

Fin's Friends Character Education Program 2025/2026 for Primary Classes | More info
The Fin’s Friends Character Education program registration 2025-26 is now open. The program which is in its 19th year is funded by Canucks For Kids Fund, the official charity of the Vancouver Canucks. This program is provided FREE to K-3 classrooms in British Columbia. There are only 100 kits available for each grade (400 in total). Teachers who have registered in past years should not register unless they have a different grade this year. The kits are good for multiple years.

Each year, the CPKC Police Service partners with Operation Lifesaver, the rail industry, government, first responders, educational institutions, and community groups to promote safe behaviours around railway property. CPKC Police Service members and Operation Lifesaver Ambassadors may also be available to do in-person or virtual rail-safety presentations for your group or community.
