Board News – Meeting of January 24, 2012
Superintendent’s Report on Achievement
Acting Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman presented this annual document which aligns closely with the District's achievement contract.
The report serves two main purposes. It is to provide transparency and accountability for the School District in terms of its responsibility for improving student achievement. It also provides information that will facilitate subsequent planning for continuing improvement of student achievement at the school and district levels.
As indicated in the report, he District has done incredibly well with completion rates and continues to see improvement in the number of students transitioning to secondary institutions.
Literacy results continue to improve with ¾ of grade 1 and 2 students reading at grade level. This is important because there is a strong correlation between kids learning to read and their future life chances.
More work will be required with numeracy going forward. (See presentation below).
The District takes great pride in the work being done to improve completion rates for Aboriginal students. We have solid programs in place but we need to maintain continued focus in order to keep the improvement trends going.
Overall, this is a report that our staff, students and families can be proud of.

Numeracy Initiatives Update
Acting Superintendent Hoffman presented on the District's numeracy initiatives to date and outlined the 3-5 year plan that is being methodically approached to improve student achievement in this area.
The District needs to look at what is being done to support our middle and intermediate grades.
It will be important to examine how teachers are meeting the needs of varied learners in their classrooms and ensure they have the assistance they require with resources and strategies
A pilot project will be undertaken to inform implementation of the plan with th ultimate goal being to decrease number of students struggling in math.
Routley Land Exchange
As Langley Township Council has deferred 3rd reading on the Routley Land Exchange, and whether or not the Township chooses to set aside land within its acreage is an important consideration for the District, the Board has deferred consideration of the motion to accept the Routley Land Exchange report until after such time as representatives of the Langley Board of Education and Township of Langley Council have met to discuss possible resolutions to this apparent impasse.
Langley DPAC Community Round Table
The Board passed a motion to appoint up to two trustees to represent the Board at the Langley DPAC Community Round Table.
